Another, far more positive, comes from the work of James Flynn, who has collated IQ tests performed all over the world over most of the past century.
What he found astonished him at first: in each decade, the IQ of the latest generation of young adults seemed to have risen, on average, by three points above that of the preceding decade.
Over the past century, this implied, the IQs of westernised people had risen by about 30 points. On a scale where 100 represents the norm this “Flynn effect” is astonishing. Flynn, a professor in New Zealand, believes this knocks the “mainly genetics” argument on the head.
“How could this be possible? No one has been selectively breeding human beings for high IQ. Environmental factors must have enormous potency.”
His conclusion is that in recent decades we have all been taught to think in a different way from our forebears.
Some of this comes down to education: classes are smaller, teachers are more skilled and we spend 14 years in school rather than the seven or so of the past. This makes a particular difference for poor and minority children. </div></div>

back in 75 a Mzugnu Jamaican named Roper made this claim to me and others .. He was the headmaster of one the traditional schools in Jamaica.. He made the point that in Jamaica it was more likely that the students who past the Common entrance came from a salaried class rather than unemployed. Ore likely to be urban than rural, more likey to female than male. that the higher income was more likely to "passing" this exam.. which was taken as a measure of inteligence in Jamaica.. and the Gsat now is...
Never took an IQ test.. I know I am as dumb as a hog...

Well, I don't know what value the test has, but fun is the only reason I take it these days. Plus, I'm smart enough to know when to defer to my wife, and I figure that's a big chunk of the smartness that I need.

If you are financially stable and intelligent (and maybe educated as well), you are likely to provide an environment where your children can flourish, and you may be able to provide the resources to enable your children to flourish - good schools, tutoring if needed, extra curicula activities like music, arts, etc. This is "nurture" but it is often passed off as "nature" or genes.
I would make haste to say, also, that children have grown up to parents in poverty, who had minimal educational achievements - sometimes those parents were nonetheless intelligent, though not educated, and sometimes, they weren't - but their children were intelligent, they excelled, and go on to be successful. They had an environment - outside that home, most often - than enabled them to succeed.
I would give more weight to environment over genes. There have always been questions as to whether intelligence can be passed down from parents to offspring.

"Why the medical profession limits it's response in relation to treatment of obesity.
they never relate obesity to a correctable malfunction of the digestive process, instead of simply suggesting that it is a result of the normal aging process. Stuff athat are considered impossible inmedicine intrigues, sometimes consumes me. Especially when i discover that the solutions are not so hard to find.
See what I mean? it is not just trivial exercise, but a real interest in improving on what we already know. You would probably say , why would any one want to discus such a topic as a means of relaxation/
and I would say to that,.. Why not?
Why limit what we enjoy to more light hearted or trivial exercises?
See what I mean again?? OK I Concede That i am limiting myself.... but to what i enjoy at this stage in life.
I have done so much in my life that most things do not hold that attraction for many more.
Other than enjoying knowing that others enjoy them.
But Dr. Dudd - anyone with some education could probably have that discussion with you... and I have learnt that being educated doesn't necessarily make you smart...
perhaps if you break it down into layman's terms you would be surprised at what the people you ignore could bring you in terms of insight

In fact the Aborigines and indigenous Africans have baffled the scientific and medical world in food, health, herbs and medicine.

That is what I am intrested in.
