Seven persons were arrested on Wednesday for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act following separate operations mounted in Bull Savannah, St. Elizabeth by the Area Three Narcotics Police.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Sixty-two year old </span>farmer Marcus Powell also called &quot;Derron&quot; and his companion, Ellorine Rochester otherwise called &quot;Miss Ello&quot; are facing charges of possession of, dealing in and cultivating ganja.

It is reported that during the operations which lasted several hours, the police held Miss Rochester and Mr. Powell as they were tending ganja plants in separate fields.

The police seized 30 pounds of cured ganja and destroyed over 1,000 seedlings <span style="font-weight: bold">in the field which was being tended by Miss Rochester.</span>

They also destroyed another 35 pounds of ganja in the field where Mr. Powell was found.

Five other persons were accosted in a two bedroom house in the community after a search revealed a quantity of weed.

<span style="font-weight: bold">The five farmers have been identified as Ainsworth Simpson,51, Howard Powell, 38, Ryan Ford, 36, Gaymour Simpson, 30 and Bryan Powell, 29, all of Bull Savannah.</span>
All five have been charged with possession of and dealing in ganja.

The seven will face the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court next week.

Beet Army Worms invade St. Elizabeth .St Bess saalt bad


The Ministry of Agriculture and officials from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) are scurrying to repel an invasion of Beet Army Worms in St. Elizabeth.

The pest, which is native to Asia but also thrives in the United States, was discovered in the areas of Flagaman, Pedro Plains and Roundhill in St. Elizabeth recently.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the worm has so far caused damage to 75 tonnes of escallion worth approximately $5 million.

The Beet Army Worm is green in colour and first appears in small groups of plants but feeds voraciously and spreads rapidly.

Infection can cause the loss of an entire field in a short time if not effectively treated.

The Ministry is also advising that outbreaks are most severe after long periods of drought followed by rains and are not easily controlled.

The Ministry is asking anyone who notices the worm to contact RADA.
