Four years after losing to the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM), the United Democratic Party (UDP) was returned to office on Wednesday after capturing nine out of the 15 seats in the Legislative Assembly.
The UDP retained all four West Bay seats (McKeeva Bush, Rolston Anglin, Cline Glidden and Capt. Eugene Ebanks) and gained two seats in George Town (Mike Adam and Ellio Solomon) and two seats in Bodden Town (Mark Solomon and Dwayne Seymour), and one in the Sister Islands (Juliana O’Connor-Connolly) to unseat the PPM.
All four West Bay Members of the Legislative Assembly won their seats easily.
In a surprise result in Bodden Town, the UDP’s Mark Scotland surpassed, with 1,453 votes, previously unbeatable PPM Minister for Health and Human Services Anthony Eden, who garnered 1,394 votes.
Finishing third in the three-seat district is first-time UDP candidate Dwayne Seymour with 1,030 votes, while PPM incumbent Osbourne Bodden registered 992 votes, trailed by PPM Minister for Tourism, Charles Clifford, with 932 votes.
Independent Theresa Pitcairn-Lewis was the closest independent challenger, finishing just behind Mr Clifford with 896 votes.
Mr Scotland and Mr Seymour are now certain to face a court challenge from the PPM, who will likely oppose their seating in the Legislative Assembly on constitutional grounds that the two missed a 20 April deadline for declaring their various companies’ interests in government contracts.
In North Side, independent Ezzard Miller – who has vowed to work with the UDP to form a government -- easily won the district. He finished ahead of Joey Ebanks, first-time PPM hopeful and heir apparent to former district MLA and Speaker of the House Edna Moyle.
In East End, former PPM Minister for Works, “Action Man” Arden McLean, easily won his home district, gaining 304 votes against rival and first-time candidate, independent John McLean Jnr, who attracted 206 votes.
In the Sister Islands, after a see-saw battle, PPM incumbent Moses Kirkconnell prevailed with 473 votes against UDP rival and second-place finisher Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, who scored 447 votes.
