The Industrialization, and newly found wealth of the Northern states brought with it the need for skilled, more educated, and <span style="font-style: italic">paid</span> labour, which was more than could be tolerated by this tradition-bound elite.

Slavery also wasn't cheap, what with the cost of; militias (and other added security measures), housing, food, clothing, medical care, replacement parts for sabotaged equipment, etc. It was much cheaper to give a man his freedom, and pay him a <span style="font-style: italic">simple</span> wage, letting him <span style="font-style: italic">foot</span> his own bills. Thus the state would mainly concentrate their security concerns on basic policing duties, and defence against external threats.

Of course, the sensitivities of the Southern Plantocrats were not so given to reason, thus leading to an unnecessary war of secession, especially once poorer whites were also convinced to go along with the crazy idea of secessionism. These same whites would have been the poorer for it, had the South actually won, because where would an agriculturally-based society have taken them???</span></span></span> </div></div>Great points!
