Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin yesterday ordered 10 cops, who were implicated in the multi-million dollar lotto scam in St James, to retire from the constabulary in the public interest.

The 10 were among 18 cops who were taken off front line duty at the Mount Salem Police Station after police cracked a section of the scam which reportedly rakes in upwards of $30 million annually.


LEWIN. made recommendation after reading DPP's report

Lewin's orders came after he leafed through a report handed to him by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn and consulted with head of the Anti-Corruption Branch, Assistant Commissioner Justin Felice.

Lewin then forwarded the file to the Police Service Commission and made recommendations that the cops be retired from the constabulary.

Six other cops were ordered reinstated by Lewin, while the roles of two others in the international scam will be further investigated.

The cops were taken off front line duty after intense investigations into the case of Kourtney Grayson, who was in April freed of impersonating a police officer and unlawful possession of property in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court when the DPP entered a nolle prosequi in the case.

Grayson was days earlier arrested and beaten by the cops, but it was later revealed that he was operating with the blessings of the cops, who reportedly outfitted hima with police uniforms and gave him an M16 assault rifle and a handgun on two occasions.

Grayson was allegedly used by the cops to shake down players in the lotto scam.

The cops allegedly tried to cover their tracks by ripping out pages of a station diary showing when Grayson was issued with the police service weapons.

The lotto scam has attracted the interests of the US and Canadian governments who last week lent their support to form the Joint Operations Linked to Telemarketing (JOLT) task force to combat the scammers.

Last Thursday, JOLT operatives searched four houses in St James and seized six cars including a high-end Lexus and Dodge; a powerful motor bike, which was later found out to have been stolen from Florida; several computers; electronic equipment; $185,000 in cash; listings with names and numbers with notations; and a licensed firearm.

Nine persons were also taken into custody for questioning.

i have to tell the people at the state lottery that. And I have to withdraw all my investments in the stock market.

As for excessive profits, there are situations where you can make profits out of this world in comparison to what the base value is. Not many but there is that possibility.

Scammers tend to use a 3-pronged attack, preying on the following weaknesses:

– our misconceptions about certain facts allow fraudsters to request unusual things without raising too many alarm bells. Often our preconceptions do not allow us to perceive any threat. The Overpayment or Advance Payment Scam is an example of how scammers know more about the Western Banking System than the general public. Did you know that a cheque that has 'cleared' into your account can still fail and leave you out-of-pocket or without the goods?

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Desire</span>
– even with the alarm bells, we tend to turn a deaf ear if we want to believe it is true. The Nigerian 419 Scam is based on this desire or greed. Personal or business circumstances often make us hope for the best even though it looks too much of a good thing. It usually is!

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Other Psychology</span>
– scammers may use our guilt and/or innate honesty or decency to persuade us to believe them and follow through with their requests. The Sweetheart Scam found on dating sites (or as another phase of one of the other scams) depends on just this technique.

That would really make all people dishonest. since undweer certain circumstances every person can break from what they know to be the norm. It is not about honesty. it is all about naive people being scammed cby people who set out to do it..

Police find lottery scammers’ data stash

The police in St. Elizabeth have made a major dent in a lottery scam operating in sections of the parish.

An operation carried out at Congo Hole in Southfield Tuesday led to the seizure of several items believed to have been used to fleece money from unsuspecting persons.

According to sub-officer in charge of the Junction Police, Inspector Lansford Salmon, a house was searched and several items including documents containing hundreds of names, addresses and telephone numbers were found.

The police also seized a laptop computer, cellular phones, Western Union receipts, a quantity of cash and a motor vehicle.

Two persons were taken into custody.

Their names have been withheld pending further investigations
