Southwest Airlines, which recently announced it will start service in Milwaukee, has added a pet fare to allow pets to fly with owners as well as increased the charge to check a third bag and added a charge for unaccompanied minors.
Small cats and dogs can fly in the cabin for $75 each way.
“These new programs and processes are just the starting point with additional initiatives planned for later this year,” Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said in a statement. “It is always our goal to be upfront with our customers and to set the right customer expectations. Our changes today associate a charge for items that are truly an extra service.”
All pets must fit in a carrier that goes under the airplane seat, which will count as the passenger’s carry-on bag.
Customers can begin purchasing pet fares on June 1 for travel beginning June 17.
Southwest also is increasing its service charge to check a third bag or an overweight bag that weighs 51 to 70 pounds. The fee will be raised from $25 to $50 for customers traveling on or after June 17.
Southwest remains one of the only airlines that allows the first two bags for free.
“The increase in the baggage charge impacts less than one percent of our customers,” Kelly says.
Southwest will start charging $25 each way for unaccompanied minors traveling alone between the ages of 5 and 11. The charge applies to tickets purchased June 1. Unaccompanied minors may only travel on nonstop or direct flights, not on flights that change planes.
“This service charge will help us cover our added costs and still maintain our competitive low-fare advantage,” Kelly says.
@ the plane smelling like some of these pet-owners homes with all those barking, meowing, mooing, braying, squeaking...uhh, pets.
