Local tourism interests say the final phase of tough new travel regulations introduced by the United States Government will not affect the local tourism market.

As of Monday, US citizens who travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean will have to present a passport or other travel documents to re-enter the US.

This as the final stage of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative comes into effect.

There are reports coming out of the US that the new travel regulations have the potential to thwart the travels of many Americans seeking to take their vacations in the Caribbean.

But President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, Wayne Cummings, says the new regulations will not affect Jamaica.

"This phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will have no additional effect on Jamaica. We have already gone through that process of implementing the passport for re-entry into the United States,

"This now applies to cruise ship passengers and those who are considered to be preferred, Mexico, Canada, etc. so we won't have any additional challenges to this milestone being achieved," Mr. Cummings said.

The US Homeland Security Department said the new requirements were designed to tighten border security in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
