Teen mother charged after dropping baby

EDMONTON -- A woman in her late teens is facing charges after she allegedly dropped her baby several times on the road Sunday morning while she was drunk, police say.

The mother was walking down the street near 34 Street and 119 Avenue at 12:49 a.m. carrying her 10-month-old boy when an apartment building security officer noticed her.

The guard called police after he watched the intoxicated woman drop the baby on the road several times. Both the mother and 10-month-old were taken to hospital.

The little boy only suffered a few bumps to his head, police say. But his mother remained in hospital yesterday.

The baby is now under provincial care while the EPS Child Protection Section investigates.

A police spokesman couldn't go into more detail on the charges the woman faces.

Police: Phoenix mom coached youthful armed robbers



PHOENIX (AP) -- A 51-year-old woman guilted her young sons and their friends into helping her pay bills by committing at least 20 armed robberies in the Phoenix area, authorities said Monday.

Cynthia Roberson, her two sons, ages 12 and 14, and five others face charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault, investigators said.

"All of us should be disgusted by this," Phoenix police Sgt. Phil Roberts said. "This is absolutely not how to raise your children."

Roberson, who is recently unemployed, guilted her sons, their friends and three men into committing robberies to pay for rent and a car loan, police said.

In all of the 20 cases, Roberson drove the getaway car and once coached a 14-year-old during a robbery because he was having trouble stealing a cell phone from a victim, police said. One victim reported that Roberson was holding a sawed-off shotgun during a robbery.

All the robbery victims were physically assaulted, police said. One 13-year-old was beaten and forced to empty his pockets - which contained only an orange lollipop.

Roberson's 12-year-old was in the custody of Child Protective Services but still faces charges; her 14-year-old was being held in a juvenile jail. Two others, a 14- and 16-year-old, also were being held in a juvenile jail.

Three men arrested were identified as: Jorge Elias, 18, Tony Vaughn, 20, and Jason Moore, 20. They were being held in a Maricopa County jail.

Police do not know how much money the group made, but said the figure couldn't be very high, considering they usually made away with a cell phone or a bit of cash.

Most of the robbery victims were between 13 and 20 years old, though some were older. They were robbed in parks and along neighborhood streets on weekends.

A young mother has been caught trying to smuggle amphetamines into a Rheinbach prison using her baby’s diaper, police in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia reported on Monday. The arrest provided clues that led to a larger bust in Siegburg
Police arrested the 22-year-old mother and her 41-year-old husband after a prison visit security check last Thursday, during which they found 15 grammes of amphetamines and 46 ecstasy pills in their 17-month-old daughter’s diaper. The mother also had 12 grammes of amphetamines hidden in her clothing.

The family had come to visit the woman’s father, who is an inmate at the facilty. But the drug find rendered the “visit to father and grandfather no more,” a police report said.

During their investigation of the incident, police discovered clues to a Siegburg couple already in the sights of local police. Fourteen officers with dogs searched their mobile home at a camping area and found 166 ecstasy pills, 530 grammes of amphetamine paste, 60 grammes of amphetamines and a Browning pistol with ammunition.

The 61-year-old man and 59-year-old woman were arrested but later released after giving statements, police said.
