Well,regardless of who is correct and who isnt about the history of selassie it`s immaterial,neither you nor I lived in that time,you chose to read and take from what reiinforces what you already thought about him,I have no axe to grind against him,I merely pointed out a conflicting view.
If you go to even the most rural parts of Jamaica you will hear old rastafarians talking about selassie as if they were philosophers and intellectuals who were actually there when events unfolded,....yet some of them has never made it past their local primary school,and has never been outside the confines of their locality. </div></div>

i'm sure you are intelligent enough to know that one judges people through their own point of view;
obviously the enemies of selassie would have no interest in painting a favorable picture of him. but why don't you do some research on the history of ethiopia before and after selassie to get a more complete picture.
why do you not attack his successor- mengistu haile-mariam- who presided over one of the worst genocides in african history?
is it because of your personal bias against rasta?
what has rasta done to jamaica except uplift them...

menelik left nothing on record regarding his thoughts on the concept of african unity...
it depends what you men by 'unifier'...he unified his empire into what we now know as ethiopia...menelik is called by some of the oromo people of ethiopia a black colonizer and slave raider (in those days they still had slavery in ethiopia- it was haile selassie who outlawed it when he came to power)...
menelik expanded the ethiopian empire in the later 1800's by absorbing some nations/tribes that were not formerly a part of the empire by force if they didn't accept it...he was also a christian emperor- king of kings as was their title; the muslims & others incorporated into the empire had to acknowlege the supremacy of the christian emperors;
now the thing is a lot of ethiopia's people say it was no different than what the european powers did in the scramble for africa, but to me on a deeper level, menelik might have seen that unity was the only way africa could fight back which is why he forcefully went conquering...
haile selassie must be seen in the context of his fathers- menelik & ras mekonnen;
at a time when all of africa was colonized by europe, these men were in control of the only african country not captured & therefore had a serious mission, of which selassie was the successor;
they were also christian surrounded by hostile islamic nations as well as hostile european colonizers;
my whole thing is that haile selassie is spoken of very negatively by most, but do they know why?
they simple rehash what they have heard without really knowing the whole story

in fact he is a very historical figure, whether one likes him or not, he played a key part in the start of world war 2 and in the subsequent indepence movement on the african continent, also in the development of the rastafarian faith- a world-wide & influential movement'...

one has to have all the facts & history...garvey lost a lot of support from his grass roots supporters for attacking the emperor in this way...
garvey also met with the klu klux klan </div></div>
