I do feel it would be best for me and my son.

Will I do it? I'm not sure yet....but I did nominate myself to work as a civilian for the U.S Army though.

It just seems with all the &quot;conflicts&quot; going on around the world and undercurrents of racial hostility in the US, now may not be the right time to volunteer.

On another board where I'm a member, one lady recounted racist comments from her white drill sergeant even when they were both off-duty. I wouldn't like to see black people putting their lives in the hands of that type of authority figure, hence some of my previous comments in this thread. I'm sure you know where I'm coming from. As for the second quote, I have always found it difficult to figure out how these extremist groups resolve the obvious conflict of serving a country they <span style="color: #FF0000">intensely hate</span>, to the point of <span style="color: #FF0000">plotting its destruction</span>, and <span style="color: #FF0000">active preparation for war with other members of the society</span>. Let alone the conflicts of conscience that should arise, within some Christian denominations who come short of venerating war, and its consequential bloodshed, alongside adoration for pacifist Jesus Christ (oh silly me, I forget that part of the Bible that refers to &quot;consciences seared with a hot iron&quot.

As a young man I had the opportunity (or misfortune) to meet members of an organization known as the 'Sons of the Confederation', at the institution I was briefly involved in, where members dressed up in long, grey overcoats, of the civil war era. They didn't express violence towards me at the time, but I am sure had the circumstances been different I would have had quite a story to tell, had I survived the experience.

Joining the reserves/armed services is not the only way to “serve your country”.

imho anyway ...

I’ve grown to <span style="font-style: italic">sometimes</span>, dislike that phrase: “serve your country” &quot;your sacred duty&quot;.

As if me supporting my PTA, paying my taxes, voting, working in my community, serving on my town’s board, raising smart children, volunteering, etc, etc, aren’t ways of serving my country and doing my civic duty.

Just because you're not in the military doesn't mean you're not serving your country.

It's funny but Anglos and Americans view taxes as the government stealing money from hard working people. In continental Europe taxes are seen as the price to pay to have good schools, day care, roads, health care, libraries, public transport, etc. available to all.

Anyway, the US government is very clever; as Americans are so reluctant to pay more taxes to get certain services, the government offers those same services as a benefit for joining the military. Evidently, volunteers see the risk of losing their lives as low (it was pre-Bush II) so it is a win-win proposition.
