Re: British Airways staff asked to work for free
Yes, and I have been but only for 6 to 8 hours per week. The firm has been layoffs and senior employees, i.e. Partners, Principals, Senior Associates, etc. have taken a 10 - 15% decrease in salary. The 'indians' like myself were given a 5% pay cut even mail room workers. A lot of technical employees were also put on 3-day work week and they too have to work the extra hours for free. To top it off we were asked to work at least 20% hours more per pay period for free. Yesterday I worked from 7:45AM - 8 PM. Technical staff have been working 38 hours more for the two week period. I'd be willing to work a week or 2 without pay but the company would have to promise that if and when business takes a turn for the better that I would be paid for the period I worked the extra hours without pay. It's not easy out there - it's hard from where I sit and I am supposed to be working right now but I am idling on JA.COM for 30 minutes.

That's madness.
Did your firm ask shareholders to forego their dividends as well?

Only if the directors and all the other big cheese also work for free for the same length of time requested of everyone else. (I think the duration requested was a month not sure - it came on the news yesterday).
Anyone thinking to work for free or at a drastic pay cut will save their job is mistaken. If the firm in question doesn't make a profit as oppose to these short term quick fixes, will find they will still face the chopping board regardless of how many years they worked for the company, how many hours they put in and how few pennies they are willing to take or even how much money they made for the company.
