A woman who wandered into a swamp on the West Plains was rescued early Thursday by firefighters and rushed to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
Fire District 10 Chief Nick Scharff said the incident occurred in the predawn hours near the Geiger Boulevard exit on Interstate 90.
An employee from a nearby Denny’s restaurant, 3711 S. Geiger Blvd., heard the woman hollering for help. He couldn’t find her, so he called authorities.
Scharff said the woman, in her late 40s, was tangled in barbed wire and sitting in water up to her neck.
She did not respond to questions, so it was unclear how she got into the water, Scharff said.
When firefighters arrived, they tried throwing a rope to her, but the woman ignored it. Firefighters then extended a ground ladder to her and pulled her to safety. Scharff said it was not known how long the woman had been in the water before firefighters arrived. A trail of bent and trampled grass showed the path the woman took getting into the swamp, he said.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Deaconess Medical Center.
Alberta-Cochran reopens to traffic
One of northwest Spokane’s key arterial routes – Alberta and Cochran streets – reopens today after more than two months of work to rebuild the surface.
The section from Northwest Boulevard to Wellesley Avenue had already reopened, and now the segment from Wellesley Avenue to Francis Avenue will open, too.
Mayor Mary Verner was scheduled to mark the reopening with an event at 10 a.m. today at the Shadle Park Presbyterian Church parking lot, 5508 N. Alberta St.
The $3.8 million project began in April and is being funded by a voter-approved 10-year street bond.
