A 65-year-old woman was slapped with criminal charges following the beating of her 12-year-old grandson, who allegedly stole credit from her phone.
The incident happened in Cross Keys, Manchester.
According to the Area Three police, the information they have so far received suggests that the child was beaten after he is said to have transferred $200 worth of credit from the woman's cellphone to his girlfriend's cellphone.
The grandmother was charged with assault and cruelty to a child on Wednesday.
"So far, what we have is that the boy was beaten after he stole some credit from his grandmother's cellphone and sent it to his girlfriend. That is actually what he said. He had bruises all over his boy and he also had an injury to his head," Inspector Martin Howell of the Area Three Police Division told THE STAR.
According to reports, about 3:30 p.m., residents alerted the police after hearing the youngster crying for 'murder'.
The police say when they arrived at the scene, the boy was seen trying to stop blood from a wound on his head. His clothes, they say, also looked as if he had been in a tussle.
When the police questioned the boy as to what had happened, he reportedly told them that he had been beaten by his grandmother.
The boy further admitted to the police that he had transferred credit from his grandmother's cellphone to his girlfriend's phone without her consent. He was confronted by his grandmother when she realised what had happened.
The grandmother was subsequently taken into custody and charged.
She was granted station bail in the amount of $30,000 and is to appear in court next week.
