NY patties being sold in JA

The Jamaica Manufacturer's Association (JMA) is seeking Government's intervention to determine why patties are being imported.
JMA President Omar Azan raised the issue at the organization's Annual General Meeting on Wednesday.
According to Mr. Azan, the practice is especially disturbing as the savoury pastry is available in abundance from local producers.
"I'm not sure it is a real widespread thing but what it shows is how we think in this country. We are a country that is known for patties, we manufacture patties, yet companies in Jamaica are importing patties out of New York to sell here.
"Foreign exchange is short so manufacturers find it hard to find foreign exchange to pay their raw material bills yet still we're finding finished products coming into Jamaica that (may not) meet the sanitary conditions required by our agencies here," said Mr. Azan.
He is questioning how the patties with patty meats are imported from the United States which does not allow the importation of meats from Jamaica to be imported into their country,
Mr. Azan added that he has already informed the Bureau of Standards, Commerce Minister Karl Samuda and Prime Minister Bruce Golding of the practice.
He stressed that the JMA has no objection to imports to fill shortages of certain products but that in light of the economic conditions it is important to buy local and support local industries.
Mr. Azan was returned unopposed as president of the JMA at Wednesday's Annual General Meeting.
