NSWMA tells parish council that men threaten, beat employees Rasbert Turner, Star Writer The collection of garbage in two St Catherine communities cannot be done without a police escort, THE STAR understands. Marcia Scott, St Catherine supervisor for the National Solid Waste Management Agency (NSWMA), told the St Catherine Parish Council recently that the employees of her agency cannot collect garbage from Frazier's Content and sections of Featherbed Lane if the police are not present and this has resulted in a pile-up of garbage in both communities. Scott was addressing the issue of garbage not being collected in Fraziers Content for months. She told the St Catherine Parish Council Monthly Meeting last Thursday that despite garbage not being collected for weeks, the safety of those employed to the NSWMA comes first. Fatal accident The supervisor repeated that the representatives could not go into these communities as some residents continue to threaten and attack workers as a result of a fatal accident that involved an NSWMA truck a few months ago. She said that one of their employees was severely beaten along Featherbed Lane three months ago and attempts to clean there was met with serious threats earlier this month. As such, Scott said they had to ask for police escort for the workers to carry out their functions. Meanwhile, Councillor Alvin Beckford of the Frazier's Content division said the NSWMA could not continue to hold the community to ransom for the actions of a few. As a result, Chairman of the St Catherine Parish Council, Norman Scott, said that a meeting would have to be convened with the community, the police and NSWMA to address the issue. When contacted, the police personnel from the St Catherine North Division stated that having received information on the issue affecting the NSWMA, they are prepared to assist with the safety of the workers until the matter is resolved. http://jamaica-star.com/thestar/20150618/news/news1.html
