Psychiatrists who evaluated 21-year-old Stephen Fray, the man who attempted to hijack a Canjet airplane in Montego Bay two months ago, say he is mentally fit to stand trial.
He will therefore answer to six criminal charges on July 13 in the Western Regional Gun Court.
RJR News understands that both psychiatrists who evaluated Stephen Fray, say he suffered from schizophrenia which caused him to hear voices and see things that were not there.
His lawyer George Thomas says an independent psychiatric evaluation done revealed that Mr. Fray was not himself at the time of the incident.
"We have the psychiatric report from the hospital and we did a psychiatric report. They are both saying the same thing that the young man is a schizophrenic," Mr. Thomas said.
It is understood that a plea for his client to be placed in a mental institution instead of the police lock-up where he has been since his arrest, was refused.
On the night of April 19, Mr. Fray breached security barriers at the Sangster International Airport and boarded Canjet flight 918.
Armed with a gun, he kept security personnel at bay and held 182 passengers and crew hostage on the aircraft after demanding to be taken to Cuba.
Mr. Fray eventually released the passengers, but kept the six-member crew on board, despite the efforts of police negotiators and family members.
He was arrested after the security team stormed the aircraft.
