WTA rankings are based on a point accumulation system. there are different &quot;tiers&quot; of tournaments and the higher the tier the more points one can get.

the more tournaments you play throughout the year, the more points you can get, so yeah you can never win a slam and still be #1.

the william sisters were never ever about playing as &quot;many&quot; tournaments as they could. they choose a select few throughout the year (helps prevent wear and tear on the body). obviously both sisters can draw a crowd and sell out venues, so the smaller tournaments would love to have them, but it's just not worth it in the end (prize money and body wear and tear)

the WTA figured out a way to have the top players participate more in US tournaments by offering a year end bonus for players who compete in the &quot;US tour&quot; tournaments, however, that nuh really faze the sisters because they still make a ton of money from the &quot;slams&quot; as well as endorsement deals.

actually the father was criticized because he didn't allow them to play junior tournaments like the other players, but he knew what he was doing.

I always thought Tiger Woods and The Williams Sisters Dad had to the best coaches of young talents and the best managers of the same in world as we know it, for seeing the potential in their kids and helping it along till it blossomed.
