Thankfully no American I have associated with has been dense enough to believe that Jamaican isn't a language. They'll usually ask me what language other than English do people in Jamaica speak. However, this one middle-aged Haitian woman was telling me about Kreyol and I said to her that it was a lot like Patois (in the way it's mixed, etc.) and she said that her Jamaican boss had told her that Patois is just English ... That bothers me, because that shows that there are Jamaicans who don't understand that Jamaican Creole is a language, and they're spreading their nonsense to non-Jamaicans who will believe &quot;the native&quot;. Obviously, i broke it down for her and she was enlightened, but it still bothered me that the Jamaican she spoke to told her that Jamaican Creole is <span style="color: #660000"><span style="font-weight: bold">just</span></span> English

But the Americans I know definitely know that Jamaican Creole is a language separate from English. Especially with the boom of Sean Paul . I had friends who would ask me to translate lol

Barnet doesn't have a thing to do with hair Cockney's adopted it
from the popular &quot;Barnet Horse Fair&quot; which started in the 16th century
where people went to buy/sell horses and cattle, nowadays its just a fun fare &quot;Coney Hilant&quot;.

How would you say it? You were quite close!

sometimes mi haffie translate all five times a day fi different peeps, especially the young students whose webpage is permanently set on reggae music stations.

I am surprised at the interest that they are taking in Jamaican Creyol; and their interest carries a certain amount of respect, with a desire to learn it.

Once upon a time, I'd hear people call Jamaican Creyol &quot;broken English&quot; and some even went further to call it &quot;pijjin English&quot;...[and this was in Jamaica when I was growing up] so that might be the reason why some of us might still think it is a derivative of English rather than a a language in it's own right.
