Trying to imagine Bajan and Trini's cussing R-C and B-C inna fi dem haccent

As I pointed out before, Patios has had a significant impact on the languge spoken
in the inner cities. Especially among teenagers who often speak in a dialect only they
can understand. There are certain words that started of as slang that eventually become
part of mainstream English and are now in the Oxford dictionary, the evolution of lanuage eh?

Yeh, dem seh 'cotch' lan inna Oxford as english word of Jamaican origin.
So english a borrow back fram wi now.

Anyway, Jamaican creole must be a language because it is used for human communication.
Even if you say is 'just a dialect' it's still a language because all dialects are languages by definition.

So true B, to think there a people who have never experienced Jamaica when it was peaceful and you could move
around freely as you pleased at anytime. Not to mention how stressful it must be for children to grow up under such circumstances

I just feel the need to point something out that makes me feel good, and bad at the same time:

Keep in mind that the Creole, that they speak, is from <span style="font-weight: bold">Jamaica</span>! It's a <span style="text-decoration: underline">dialect</span> of <span style="font-weight: bold">Jamaican Creol</span>e that got brought over there YEARS and YEARS ago! But they're, on a whole, soooooo much more proud of it than Jamaicans are of Jamaican Creole (Patwa//Patois).


Like I said, it makes me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because, well, at least they have been and <span style="font-weight: bold">currently are</span> making strides to <span style="font-weight: bold">promote</span> Kriol which at the same time is promoting Jamaican Creole because it's pretty much the same thing. <span style="font-weight: bold">I went on a &quot;Belize Web&quot; forum to be nosey , and they have a WHOLE discussion section about Belize Kriol (patwa) </span> <span style="color: #006600">GO ON IT AND READ SOME OF THEIR POSTS IN KRIOL AND YOU'LL SEE THAT IT'S ALMOST EXACTLY/EXACTLY THE SAME AS PATWA</span>... I was reading some of the posts and I had to check the web page to make sure it wasn't a Jamaican forum!

It's not ONLY spoken in Jamaica, and in areas populated by the Jamaican diaspora, but dialects (versions) of Patwa are spoken in <span style="font-weight: bold">T&amp;T, Barbados, Bahamas, Grenada, Coast of Costa Rica, Coast of Panama, Coast of Nicaragua, Guyana, Belize...</span> The &quot;<span style="font-weight: bold">KRIO</span>&quot; that the people of <span style="font-weight: bold">Sierra Leone</span> speak is <span style="font-weight: bold">BASED</span> on <span style="font-weight: bold">JAMAICAN CREOLE</span> <span style="color: #006600">(when slaves were freed by the British, hundreds left the island and relocated to Sierra Leone, Africa and <span style="font-weight: bold">brought that JAMAICAN PATWA WITH THEM</span></span>...

I have even met a woman who came from <span style="font-weight: bold">NORTHERN BRAZIL</span> (near the border between Guyana and Brazil) and she told me that she (obviously) speaks Portuguese fluently (because she was born and raised in Brazil), but what shocked me is that she said her family, and the people in her town, <span style="font-weight: bold">speak PATWA at home</span>! This is probably because of the proximity to Guyana, but stil!!! lol


I just really wish people would realize these things... Especially Jamaicans...

It's crazy to me... Belizeans being more proud of Patwa than Jamaicans are!! That's like people from Quebec being more proud of French more than people from FRANCE! Madness.

IronMan, thanks for that post and link. It only serves to reinforce what you and others have been saying all along...the beauty and the legacy left us by our ancestors in the form of Jamaican Creole.


Not to be lengthy, you shouldn't feel sad about the fact that many Jamaicans look down on &quot;Patois&quot; and &quot;Patois speakers.&quot; Many Jamaicans are ashamed of many things Jamaican; including but not limited to, whey dem cum fram [area] their economic status in the society [if dem poor[er], their appearance, and WORSE OF ALL THEIR PARENTS...Yes, there are Jamaicans who are ashamed of their parents..

Oh yes, there are a very many Jamaicans who would lie about their background, just to &quot;keep up appearances&quot; and fool others and themselves about their true circumstances. I knew girls who would meet suitors at the homes of others because they didn't want the guy to know where they really cum fram, fearing that he would reject them. .


Having said all that, I am truly happy that all this is changing, in terms of the fact that we can be proud of not only where wih come fram, but the fact that Jamaican Creole has finally achieved the status that it deserves, and that had been denied it over the centuries.

Now, all who did shamey shamey to speak Jamaican Creole should now feel relieved that they can speak their language without fear of being scorned or criticized. If I may say so, much of the feeling of inferiority is tied in with the <span style="font-weight: bold">idea</span> that Jamaican Creole is NOT a language. [that was already debated in your thread].


All mi agguh seh is, dere are many who would trade places with a baaawn a yaawd Jamaican anyday, and even call demself Jamaican; would do almost anything just to be able to talk Jamaican Creole, and here habbie habbie noh want ie and wantie wantie cyaan get ie.

Prolly if wi juss took di time to look in the mirror and see our true selves, we would be even more miles ahead in the con game where we [mek mi seh some of us, who di cap fit] are just conning ourselves, and losing at that..


Strangely enuff, one family member is married to a Panamanian whose parents speak Jamaican Creole [from Panama] and they have a Belizean tenant who does also...it is amazing to hear them speak with the different accents during a get together..

Yes, but only one person posted that and he/she is barely a member of the forum. Plus, all of those who post after them were quick to point out that he was a poser and quickly defended Patwa.
