Illiteracy is high in the city and 75 per cent of people are unemployed but Trevor meets two girls hoping to turn their lives around through the group Area Youth, a project aimed at uniting young people in the ghettos through music.

The group persuaded the gang leaders to let them run their project as an alternative to the devastation caused by gang warfare and now the gang’s ‘Godfathers’ are so supportive of this truce that they are prepared to punish anyone who breaks the peace.

Danille and Tisha invite Trevor to a special performance of a song they wrote which was inspired by the tragic shooting of a baby caught in crossfire. It stormed the charts in Jamaica last year. After listening to their performance Trevor visits the home of the founder of Island Records, <span style="font-weight: bold">where Bob Marley convalesced after being shot during gang violence</span>.

While the govt factor in remittances as part of its foreign exchange earnings, it's sent directly to families to help out, and those who depend on may suffer.

I think Jamaicans in the diaspora should support a grassroots political movement - a third party - in Jamaica made of competent individuals of the highest integrity - fresh/young blood - provide it with all the funding it needs to undertake its operations of organizing, communicating its ideas/message, and fielding qualified candidates for office.

This political movement should have as its core principles the following:
- Candidates residing in the communities they seek to represent in Parliament, and who are also selected by the people of those communities.
- A fixed election date.
- Free education to the Bachelor's degree.
- Free health-care.
- A commitment to robust private enterprise with appropriate regulations.
- Removing the bureaucratic hurdles in the way of efficiency and enterprise.
- Social justice: affordable justice, equality before the law, equitable tax structure, equal opportunities for all, enforcing the rights and freedoms that already exist under the constitution.
- A commitment to stamping out corruption and putting in place or enforcing the appropriate steps to ensure transparency.
- All public policies - economic and social - should be formulated based on empirical evidence and sound analysis.

Well I'm in for the letter writing so far, and I also think that your strategy is a more medium-term (1-3years planning).
I do feel that the letter/email sending would be more of a jolt - like "striking while the iron's hot".

Just to add some concreteness to this, I recently wrote the to Ja.Government making suggestions on economic policies...I don't personally know who got the emails but it was to their recomended contacts at JIS.

But yes, there needs to be concerted efforts made to identify how any programmes will be funded - this can include new taxes, or the diversion of funds from other less effective programmes.
One of MY mainstay would be making employment more secure for the low-income workers, as they are the most vulnerable in the loop.

This is always raised whenever free education and health care comes up. I was stating that these should be principles that should form the platform of this movement.

No we shouldn't. Remittances are for individual familes and our fight is with the paid help not the the Citizens of Jamaica.

I think if we are going to do it would be much easier this time even as it is very late in the day.
I think we should focus on two to three issues only and target the campaign to the All Politicians, The Diaspora Organizations and the Media.

We would need to collect emails, twitter and other social media accounts of the targets.
Agree on the wording, then each copy the same wording very time we send out a missive.

Even if we are not going to do it, we should at least collect emails address of responsible persons in Jamaica and post them somewhere on this site so individuals could take actions for or against as they wish.

The problem is the one on Jamaica seems to be more accurate than it is inaccurate.

i think they are more intelligent than that...
with a current crime problem wracking trinidad, they probably wonder why has this trinidadian guy totally ignored that in his report on the <span style="font-weight: bold">caribbean </span>to focus on jamaica's ills?
even in the synopsis he admitted he was apprehensive about visiting jamaica- to me it shows he had a preconceived notion about jamaica & went about to prove it to himself:

Thats exactly my point Jah Boot, many peoples first impression of Jamaica is that it is an extremely violent and dangerous place.
Thats the preconceived view, rightly or wrongly, many have. They tend not to have that view of Trinidad even though it has a worsening crime problem.

Whats more important is how the so called "diaspora" can develop effective ways of holding the GOJ's feet to the fire. I feel they should be embarassed alot more because they behave as if they have carte blanche to do as they please.

yes- depending on where i'm going;

i also have apprehension about visiting the great united states- brownsville section of brooklyn which is more violent than many places in africa
