and.....why do most ppl in Ja want to see the airline go....I mean i know its a taxpayers burden as u say, but dont they have the pride and luv for the airline like we in the diaspora have for it???

it seems sooo hopeless now for us who really luv and are sooo proud of our AJ~

I didn't know that most people in Jamaica want to see the Air Line go, that is interesting? What I do know is that mere pride cannot operate a business successfully.

In my opinion there are three points to consider:
This business that all Jamaicans subsidizes yet it only benefits some Jamaicans.
The Air Line is losing money has only turned a profit once in memory <span style="font-style: italic">(although the GOJ said it recently turned a small profit)</span>.
Jamaica is broke; the World Bank estimates that one category 4 hurricane this season has to potential wipe out Jamaica's Economy

Nothing in this economic climate which would mean anything....mindset changes r needed bigtime in Jamaica....seem simplistic but behind our abject failures is the simple fact of jcans seemingly able to separate dere ability to put self ahead of country n den debate the resulting realities as if dem decisions etc no help mek di mess...u eva notice how the psoj n all dem oddas including di politicians can 'compartmentalise'

That statement sums it up.

One of the biggest loss that the Jamaican and Caribbean community will feel immediately is the &quot;free&quot; giveaways that Air Jamaica gave to the various associations (alumni and NGO) for their events raffles/fundraisers. I am involved in a few local associations and I can assure you that none of the other Airlines do this (even when the economy was good).

Prior to the establishment of the airline the airlines use to charge higher rates to travel to Jamaica that to much more remote places. As a result the tourism product was unattractive to passengers, due to the cost of travel.
So it was intended to be a support service to industry just like the roads are support services to transportfor itr's own good.. If we should sell off all the roads and have them charge tolls to move in the country it may make some quick cash, but in the long run we will pay doubly for the decision. the same will be the case in the future.
...and let me say this one more time Jamaica is not in the business of making a profit like all other countries. It is in the business of offering services to support the industries that keep the country economically viable. Jamaica has no other toll against anti-compettive actions of for profit airlines, but ti own their own liner. The only reason why th eJamaican tourism product is the only one that sill maintain positivegrowth is due to the presence of Air Jamaica as a government owned aoirline. capitalism is good, but it has to be adequately regulated for it's own good.

The Editor, Sir:

I wish to express concern on behalf of the Air Jamaica Privatisation Committee, which I chair, about a misleading story - headlined 'Air Jamaica Sold ...' - which appeared in the Saturday, July 4, issue of The Gleaner.

I characterise the story as 'misleading' because Air Jamaica has not yet been sold. It was stated clearly in a news update which was issued June 30, that the privatisation committee has made a recommendation regarding a possible transaction. The press release also made it clear that a decision on that recommendation had to be made by Cabinet and the board of Air Jamaica. Neither of those activities has as yet taken place.

No contracts signed

Additionally, both the headline and the other sections of The Gleaner's July 4 story - which named two firms which &quot;have bought the country's national carrier, Air Jamaica&quot; - give the impression that the privatisation committee and the minister have misled the country by executing a sale, while advising the country that only a recommendation, which is to be decided upon, has been made. This is far from true and I use this opportunity to reiterate that such formal approvals have not been made and that no contracts have as yet been signed with anyone.

Recent experience with other privatisation efforts should make everyone aware of just how carefully negotiations of this nature must be handled. The negotiations to privatise Air Jamaica are at an extremely delicate stage and the confidentiality arrangements remain in place until initial agreements are signed, key stakeholders are brought up to date on the possible implications of the sale and there is final closure.

While we understand the desire of media houses to 'scoop' each other on matters of national interest, such as the Air Jamaica privatisation, we urge that care be taken to ensure that nothing is done to derail what is a critical transaction for and on behalf of all the people of Jamaica.
