There are some serious problems in this work environment that cannot be addressed by management responding with &quot;I don't want any racism in the office.&quot; When a co-worker uses language that is offensive to you, it may not be racism as much as it is unprofessionalism. That is the root of the matter that upper management needs to address. Unprofessionalism as far as the use of hostile language and behavior that should not be tolerated in any office. </span>

Again, it did not create an environment for anyone except me - and I wouldn't call it hostile. I wasn't angry.

OK, the conversation was about 'gay' and he obviously didn't like it. Maybe he's that way inclined.

<span style="font-family: 'Comic Sans MS'">OK. Hostile work environment here means you go to work and face some potential harrassment from a co-worker. Not that you can't handle it on a personal level, but that you SHOULD NOT have to deal with this in your working day. See the point I am making?

This is a management problem - not yours, not your co-workers, not even the offender. You go to work to earn a living and you should have respect and dignity on your job. This employee is out of bounds and if management tolerates this behavior then they condone workplace harassment and hostility. </span>
