Indigent Latrine Programme coming to St. Elizabeth
Monday, 13 July 2009
The St. Elizabeth Parish Council is threatening to take more than 200 people before the courts for not having proper toilet facilities at their homes.
The Parish Council says this is to force them to construct proper toilets.
The Council made the decision recently at its monthly meeting.
According to the Council, based on a health department survey done on a section of the parish, 251 households do not have proper toilet facilities.
It fears that if changes are not made to how waste is disposed, the parish's many streams which lead to the water supplies may become contaminated.
The Council announced that it plans to introduce a programme called the Indigent Latrine Programme.
It says it will submit a proposal to the secretariat of the Constituency Development Fund to carry out the programme.
The Council has said however that before it takes legal action, several councillors will be helping the householders build proper toilets.
