For two of the friends in question we received the same education as we went to the same schools, they aren't more or less competent than I and as a matter of fact they think I'm better suited for their jobs than they are as they come to me for advice and help when they are stuck. it may be that I'm bigger than they are and more intimidating (dark or light they still fear a big black man) for the darkest out of the four our grades were pretty much similar, both at the top of the class, both of us didn't struggle during school. I've known light skinned blacks that did terribly and that did well same goes for darker skinned. I really think in that case it's dependent on their situation and not skin colour. My Girlfriend is darker than I am, she's EXTREMELY intelligent, but she did poorly in school because she lacks self-confidence due to her parents and the family that was supposed to support her always breaking her down. Making her second guess herself.

That's the thing, we need to come together and get over it, the whole slavery issue came to be to create that divide to keep us separate, you have a plantation of slaves that outnumber the whites, what security measures are in place to protect the whites? sure you have guns etc, but back then guns were slow and not accurate, so you divide the people amongst themselves and ensure they don't work together. we are STILL doing that and STILL a community disbanded. sure we can discuss it and it's worth discussing if its to heal the rift instead of prove a point that light skinned blacks have it easier etc. it's like going to marriage counseling, you don't go to throw your point in the face of your partner, you go to come together, work things out and save the union. How do we as a cmmunity bridge that gap, we can admit that overall it seems light skinned people are given preferential treatment, fine now lets get over that and work to becoming a community. stop begging the outsiders to accept us and lets accept ourselves, no matter the hue. you don't see chinese people arguing if cantonese, mandarin or hakka are prefeered, they set up their own shops and take the money they need to build their community. Jewish people in north america don't argue about orthodox vs relaxed Judaism to the point that it divdes them and keeps them down, they build businesses and take the money to give their kids a better legacy. what do we do? we infight and argue and tear each other down and keep the slavery cycle alive and well, THAT'S the legacy we're leaving for our kids right now, to perpetuate that foolishness. I call it foolishness not to diminsh the hurt that people DO feel from it, but to illustrate that it's something we need to overcome, it SHOULDN'T be important to US within our community because we have everything we need to sustain our own and build up our own "Africatown's" not just have it accepted that the ghetto is that, esp since we don't even OWN the ghetto to call it ours.

For true, there shouldn't even be any "black" people in the first place.
Of course when at disadvantage we complain(and all of a sudden we are all black, skin tone dont count) but those who profit from which ever division happily maintain them.
Because it na bring advantage for you where you want it, well is life.

Talking change nothing, it is like it is. I personally love classification and categories, the only way to understand and appreciate differences.

Depends on where you are in the world.
Some blacks in America, with the "one-drop" rule, would naturally be regarded as white in some parts of Europe. Similarly in many parts of Africa.
If you are darker than the paper-bag in some parts of Africa, then you will be still be regarded as light-skinned even though you may consider yourself dark in the US or Brazil.
In Jamaica, a wide group of people are considered "black" but lightskinned, again some of these would be fitting into another race (Asian/middle eastern, etc) elsewhere.

The colour struckedness/class structure based on shades of the black people of African origin is much more prevalent in Caribbean,US, (not really Brazil where it goes into the mulatto jibberish).

It's all a total nonsense of course!

I'm not talking about within china or isreal, I'm talking about their communities in north america. go to a china town, go to a little italy, jewish town or a greek town or what have you in any north american city then find the "black part of town" the differences are immediately noticeable without having to dig deep and find out who owns what and so forth. Jews in isreal have torn down that place because of their infighting, we all know that, but over here, do you see that happening, hell look at hollywood if you want to see how Jews come together to create a legacy and reap TONNES of rewards.

What i REALLY believe is that talking about it hasn't and won't do any good without people coming together to end it. to use my counseling metaphor again, you can go to therapy as much as you want but without taking action with the discoveries you make there is no progress. that's where we are as a community now, we lack progress. We can call out and cite racism and colourism and spit out all the facts and studies that we want, there are things we know and things we assume, fine but when are we as a community going to say forget that stuff let's get going. Because I'm light skin doesn't mean that I don't carry with me the prejudices against my community, when I walk down the street people don't hesitate to lock their car doors because I'm lighter skinned than you may be, they don't pull out a colour metre and judge me based on where it is on the scale.

YES if a darker skinned male the same size as me went in for an office job that I'm at more than likely they'd favour me before even talking to us, but a white guy would get favoured and then a chinese guy even more so if it were an accounting position. it sucks it's unfair but instead of one lording it over the other why are we not building up our own businesses and such to have our own, and build up something worth having? and when our brothers and sisters need help despite their complexion, we should offer that hand to help bring them up too. Instead of saying "Ohh you too light you have it easier in this world then me so I won't help you" or "ooh you're too black, it's bad for my business, I won't help you"

I'll keep calling it foolishness because from the outside looking in I guarantee you that they are saying "look at these dumb n-words can't get along for five minutes to do anything productive if it's not on a basketball court." It's like Turkey's on the farm arguing about who's getting better food not realizing they are all getting slaughtered and sold to the market come thanksgiving. And as Skelly said what IS light skinned? put me in a room with wesley snipes and I'm white, put me in a room with Terrance Howard and I'm the dark skinned brotha. so what's the measure, that's why it's foolishness to me, anything that we can work together to overcome that we aren't working on overcoming is foolishness. It's like going to McDonald's eating supersized double quarter pounder combos with milkshakes and complaining that you can't lose weight. it's within us to fix this and bypass those who would keep it held against us. we will NEVER be universally accepted by anyone, no one will, it's an unattainable goal, but we CAN make changes inside of ourselves to build a majority stake in our own community, where we represent ourselves better than we let others represent us. SO that that becomes the standard that we see as a community, for our kids to keep building on so that eventually this kind of discussion is as outdated as the argument that it's impossible to teach blacks how to read.

What do YOU personally want to see? do you want to see equal treatment? do you want light skinned blacks to start losing out and dark skinned to start winning? do you want to see the community BECOME a community? what is your hope for your kids? that's what I want to know. For you what is it that you want discussions like this to lead to?

i totally agree...we have the power to reverse this foolishness about skin shade; it is really very primitive thought & has no place in civilization; if others want to practice racism they will have to answer for it...
but why should we continue to perpetrate colorism & shade-ism among our own?
i'm sure everyone here has various shades of people in their families & probably even their own children as i do;
we must eliminate this thinking, both light-skin & dark-skin peeps;
we can't afford to let other peoples primitive philosophies rule our minds;

What is your point? Jews are not the same. They are all over and of differences. Why go so far to say Jews in Hollywood? What about the rest?
You are not fair at all, blacks work together well on farms, railroads, fields(including basketball) and so on. A joke me a mek Why can you only find quality in blacks by comparing them to others? That is degrading. I was also on the verge of believing that crap until I looked at it from different sides.

There is no need to be ashamed of your lightskin. Everybody should be proud of what they are.
