MoBay media boss attacked, stabbed - Alleged attacker had circulated freaky email

Montego Bay-based media boss and political analyst Lloyd B. Smith was the victim of a recent attack that police say resulted in him being stabbed a number of times.

Sources yesterday told THE STAR that a report made to the police on June 26 by Smith, managing director and editor of the Western Mirror newspaper, states that he was at the Texaco service station at Fairview, Bogue, around 9:30 p.m. when he was attacked.

Ian Croll, 26, a man said to be known to Smith, was arrested and charged with assault at common law following the incident. He was released on bail yesterday and is set to attend court in the matter on July 27.

Allegations are that Croll, who THE STAR has learnt is a freelance writer of Johnson Town, Hanover, opened the front-passenger door of the vehicle and used a ratchet knife to stab Smith a number of times.

Earlier this week, this newspaper received a copy of a letter being circulated by the accused attacker, addressed to Prime Minister Bruce Golding.<span style="font-weight: bold"> In the document titled 'Young man sexually exploited needs help from PM', the man raised several allegations and questions about the publisher.</span>
Efforts by THE STAR to contact Smith proved futile up to press time.

Efforts by THE STAR to contact Smith proved futile up to press time. </div></div>I hope they report this for what it is. The majority of gay attacks in Jamaica are actually domestic abuse gone bad.
I hope the police arrest the attacker and allow him to put it out in open courts for once. Since the majority of gay attacks have been settled out of the courts, and then blame it on homophobes. I am sure the gay men have more to fear from their ex's than the general public.

Political analyst and popular Montego Bay-based media boss, Lloyd B Smith is fine and was unharmed during an alleged attack a few weeks ago.

The newspaper businessman said he wanted to clear the air on the incident, especially since he had been receiving phone calls from concerned persons seeking out his well-being after reports in THE STAR yesterday that he was injured.

Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, Smith said: &quot;I was not stabbed anytime at all.&quot; He however alleged that, &quot;the man attempted to stab me but I was able to avoid the knife making contact with my body.&quot;

Smith said he also wished to point out that the incident occurred on Monday, June 29 and not the 26. The court date, he continued, is on July 29.

The Montegonian told THE STAR that on the day of the incident, he stopped at the service station at Fairview to purchase phone cards and other supplies and was attacked shortly after returning to his sports utility vehicle (SUV).

He said that he was sitting inside when his alleged attacker, who he identified in his police report as Ian Croll, opened the front passenger door of the vehicle and stabbed at him. Smith, who said that his SUV was already in reverse at this time, said he panicked and jumped out of his vehicle which backed into two other cars damaging them. He said that himself and the drivers of the two other vehicles went to the police that night where the matter was reported. Croll was later arrested and charged with assault.

In relation to a letter that was released by the alleged attacker, as was mentioned in THE STAR on Wednesday, Smith noted: &quot;That thing that is being circulated is a total lie.&quot;
