KINGSTON – The father, mother and brother of the three teenage girls found dead in a car submerged in a canal near Kingston on June 30 have been charged with first-degree murder.

Montreal residents Mohammed Shafi, an electronics businessman, wife Tooba Mohammad Yhaya and 18-year-old son Hamid Mohammed Shafi were also charged with the killing of the fourth person found in the Rideau Canal, 50-year-old Rona Amir Mohammed. Though Shafi originally told Kingston police Mohammed was his cousin, she is actually his first wife, Insp. Brian Begbie said at a 2 p.m. news conference.

Begbie and chief Stephen Tanner would not directly say why they believe the family committed the murders. Asked whether he believed they were &quot;honour&quot; killings, as suggested in an email to police by Mohammed's sister Diba Masoomi, who lives in France, Tanner suggested it was possible but not certain.

&quot;That will form a part of the ongoing investigation,&quot; he said. &quot;There are family members in a variety of parts of the world, and investigators will be following up with them. I did receive one email correspondence from someone who was claiming to be a relative — most likely was — that indicated that that could be one possibility. But yet again, that person is far removed from Canadian soil and from direct knowledge. So we have to, and will, investigate that fully in the coming weeks.&quot;

Honour killings are typically those committed by males against female relatives who are perceived to have brought shame upon the family. The Shafi family hails from Kabul, Afghanistan, a country in which honour crimes are more common, and lived in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, for 15 years before arriving in Canada two years ago.

The Shafis are not conservative Muslims, a Montreal relative of Tooba Mohammad Yhaya, Said Fazel, has told the Star.

The deceased teenage girls are Zainab Shafi, 19, Sahar Shafi, 17, and Geeti Shafi, 13. Tanner said that the behaviour of one or more of the teenagers may have contributed to the motive for the killing.

&quot;Some of us have different core beliefs, different family values, different sets of rules; certainly these individuals, in particular the three teenagers, were Canadian teenagers who have all the freedom and rights of expression of all Canadians,&quot; Tanner said. &quot;Whether that was a part of the motive within the family — based on one of the girls' or more of the girls' behaviour — is open to a little bit of speculation, but combined with other investigative issues as well.&quot;

In the immediate aftermath of the deaths, an apparently distraught Yhaya told a Star reporter that Zainab liked to practice driving and may have accidentally driven into the water; a sobbing Mohammed Shafi, who said he could not eat or sleep, said Sahar also might have been driving.

Begbie said those claims were false.

They have each been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

These people want to have freedom, but they got it and couldn't appreciate it enough to stay out of prison. It is really true that you always take you with you wherever you go. They need todevelop a new personality. Now iof these people can kill all their own family,in a country where it is illegal to do so? what kind of change does the west think they can induce to them in their own country??

And th eworstpart o fit is that they betrayed their family members trust. I am sure they never for a minute believed that their family members would ever do that to them.

Lawd... </div></div>These cultures have in in certain initiation that bestows the family's assets to the sons. this is usualenough to keep them under the father's control. Remember that these people also tend to own much tangible assets,which is normally transferred to the sons. So they more often than not adopt the father's stance in these things. Not to mention the expended family's 9influence on them too.

whehn they were first interviewed that is what I thought too...as soon as the father said his eldest was &quot;rebellious&quot; I thought I bet you all the tea in china they had their girls killed.



PLus the mom didnt cry right on TV it was like watching a TV show where the actress bawls down the place but no tears come

all the girls had to do was show some free thinking like wearing jeans or talking to boys at school for their parents to label them relbellious and worthy of death.

The three accused arrived for a bail hearing in Kingston court Thursday afternoon, with the girls' parents arriving in separate police cruisers. The son was the last to arrive in an unmarked car, dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans. He was taken past media through the back of the courthouse.

The three appeared separately, each with their own counsel. All three will be held in police custody until their next court appearances, scheduled for Aug. 6.

&quot;It's obvious my client is very emotionally distraught by the whole tragedy,&quot; Yahya's lawyer Lucie Joncas said outside court, adding that the mother is grieving for her children.

Waice Ferdoussi, who represents Shafia, said that his client was ``very surprised&quot; he was arrested and that they were a &quot;close family.&quot;

&quot;These are very severe charges, not a joke,&quot; he added.

KINGSTON–It was not an honour killing, and it was not murder, says a relative of the suspects now charged in the deaths of three sisters and another woman, found in their car in the Rideau Canal.

It was &quot;sabotage,&quot; said Zarmina Fazel, whose niece, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, is the mother of the three girls. Yahya is charged in their deaths, along with her husband, Mohammad Shafia, and their son, Hamed Mohammad Shafia, 18.

Yesterday, in an exclusive interview with the Star, Fazel pounded the table when asked about an &quot;honour killing&quot; and claimed the deaths were the result of suicide on the oldest girl's part.

&quot;Zainab was not normal,&quot; Fazel ventured. &quot;She kept saying, `My life is boring,' all the time.&quot;

Zainab Shafia, 19, and her sisters Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, died June 30 along with relative Rona Amir Mohammed, 50. The whole family was returning from a trip to Niagara Falls and had stopped for the night in Kingston.

Shafia &quot;is a very honest man,&quot; Fazel said. &quot;He wants to kill three girls? Impossible.

&quot;And this woman (Yahya) is not this kind of person. When there is (a) fly in room, she opens (a) window to let it out.&quot;

Fazel said an autopsy performed on the four victims &quot;was negative&quot; for anything suspicious and that they simply drowned.

&quot;No shooting, no hitting, no poison. Just water in the stomach,&quot; she said.

Neighbours of the family, who lived in a modest rented home in the Montreal borough of Saint-Leonard, said they were quiet and respectful.

Joyce Gilbert, who lives below the family, told the Star the teenage girls were &quot;angels.&quot;

But last spring, Zainab apparently fell in love with a boy who was from a different community, possibly Pakistani, Gilbert told La Presse yesterday.

&quot;The father didn't want them going out together,&quot; Gilbert said. &quot;The girl ran away for two or three weeks and the police came.&quot;

The girls dressed in a modern fashion, though reservedly, and did not wear head scarves, Gilbert said.

Shortly after the tragedy, Shafia said Rona Amir Mohammed was his cousin. But police yesterday said she was his first wife.

Diba Masoomi, a resident of France, contacted Kingston police to claim that Mohammed, her sister, was Shafia's first wife and that the marriage had been kept secret after they moved to Canada.

Masoomi said her sister had feared for her life.

&quot;For some time, my sister, as well as the ... couple's oldest daughter, Zainab, had been receiving death threats for social, cultural and family reasons,&quot; she wrote to police.

Masoomi told the Kingston Whig Standard that her sister could not have children, and so Shafia took a second wife.

Fazel denied Shafia and Mohammed were married. Fazel sponsored Mohammed to come to Canada from Dubai last year, she said.

Fazel suggested some allegations against the family originate from one of Yahya's brothers, who she said is an avowed enemy of Shafia.

Yahya married Shafia at age 17 and her family was not happy about it, Fazel said.

She also said the family was not trying to flee the country when they were picked up by authorities Wednesday morning.

They were heading to a meeting with the lawyer Fazel hired for them, she said, adding police took the family's passports early on in the investigation.
