seeking jamaican culture in boston mass. please help.

hey there everyone. i am not Jamaican but i am interested in any cultural events planned for Boston. I am a reporter for a newly formed web based site dedicated to Boston lifestyle. music,food, entertainment, and culture is the main focus. my job as of right now is to tie together all those elements as a sort of guide for tourist and folks out and about in Boston. the site itself is tentatively scheduled for an October debut but my colleges and i are collecting stories and info in preparation. specifically what I'm looking for are events, exhibits,tours,entertainment,etc.. focused on Jamaicans and their culture. our target audience are young professionals, college students and tourist interested in experiencing all that Boston has to offer.
if you know of any upcoming events and would like to help spread your culture a bit more than please contact me with info. the more detailed the better(time, place, specific focus if any of event)and if your info is used I'll be sure to give you credit for your help. thank you so much for your help and i hope to hear from plenty of you.

<span style="font-size: 11pt"> We <span style="font-weight: bold">had </span> a Jamaican culture probably 15 years ago, but what passes for Jamaican culture is West Indian culture.
They are labeled Jamaican, but have no Jamaican members.. They have members of other West Indian countries though. The Jamaican in the name is usually what it was once up on a time before the Jamaicans withdraw quietly.

The problem is they simply don't socialize well with Jamaicans from the rock too much.
You see the general opinion of the other cultures that makes up the West Indian culture,is what we as Jamaicans know is the exaggerated behavior promoted in entertainment and even news. This is believed to be the way Jamaicans live. They don't realize that if the norm was reported in the news,it would not be worth reading. Since we all know it Or if the usual was performed in plays it any form of paid entertainment, it would not elicit the laughter.. So they believe that we are so this, we are much more conservative that they realize. As a result cur interactions are never as cordial as they expect. And we quietly withdraw, to meeting each other in our homes etc. So you will find places that sell Jamaican food, or their interpretation of it and the same for entertainment, but a Jamaican culture is really very private affair between those who know where to meet.
Others may have their own Jamaican affairs that I am not aware of too. One thing though is ther is a large Jamaican population in the Boston suburbs. Probably greater than the Boston metro.
Reason being the community standards in relation to clean streets and quiet neighborhoods, is more attractive to Jamaicans.
Yes I know we have a different reputation. Hey most public reputations are created by the extraordinary, Not the common behavior.


The common is usually taken for granted.
Since we are treated as being 'exotic' the difference is what stand out.
well most of those difference, is the extraordinary and is for show.
It is not real, So youi may be next to a Jamaican but don't know it.
Hope you find the Jamaican culture in Boston. look around the college scene.
You will be much more likely to meet Jamaicans involved in the cultural scene.

Wow! Who knew.

This is common in many cities but not too many people would admit it. Thanks Dr. Dudd for your thorough response. Like me 3rd grade teacher used to say, there is a big difference between answering questions and responding to questions. Me personally learned from your response.
