No Dave I didn't know that, but when I was with him at Sunfest in LA and we were back stage it was incredible how many people paid respect to him. I was standing by his side when 3 members of Third World got down on the ground to pay respect to him, no lie. They said' Mr Higgs you are the grandfather of reggae music, you taught Bob and the Wailers to harmonize. You are the foundation of reggae music." Then came along Marcia, saying something similar. I'm telling you, what a great man he was.
So my night went something like this. I drove to LA from SF with 2 Jamaican rasta friends of mine to go to Sunfest. We went to the show and soon after arriving my 2 friends went wandering about. I was standing chatting with Tommy Cowen, when I spotted Joe Higgs. He looked so dapper in his suit and hat. He wasn't performing on stage that night. I approached him and told him how dapper he looked and what great pleasure it was watching him perform numerous times in SF. He was a gentleman to a T. He asked me who I had come with and I told him, he knew both of the men I came with. He asked me if I had a backstage pass to go with him and I said no. He called over one man and told him to go get me a backstage pass. Within a couple of minutes, he grabbed my hand and took me with him. Nobody passed him without stopping to pay respect to him. After an hour or so backstage with him holding my hand, I followed him out to the amphitheater where the show was going on. Many people approached him, he was humble and pleasant to chat with people. Then as Third World was performing, he leaned over and serenaded me in my ear. It was sweet and memorable. After the show ended he asked me if I'd like to accompany him to an after party where all of the artiste were going. I told him that I was the driver and needed to take my friends back to the Hollywood Bowl hotel where we were staying, so I appreciated the offer, but I have to decline. Then he said to me, so gently and sweetly,"maybe you are frightened that I might do something to you, I can see that in your eyes, but I would never disrespect you in anyway". I still had to decline his invitation. I went with my friends back to the hotel and went to bed. Early in the morning the phone in my hotel room started ringing, but I didn't answer it. At about 6 am I finally picked up the phone and I heard this, "TSmall, it's me JOE. I've been calling you all night and here I am in the hotel lobby waiting to see you again". I told him I was sleeping and would talk to him another time. Later that day I went to a Carifest at UCLA and there was Joe Higgs. We talked for a very long time, he gave me his home and cell numbers and we kept in touch. He was always kind, respectful and gentle when he spoke to me. The next year he passed away. May he rest in peace.
