Two killed in ganja plane crash

A small aircraft containing almost 2,000 pounds of ganja crashed in Schwallenburgh, near Mount Rosser in St Catherine, killing two persons onboard this morning.

Police reported that the plane that nosedived and then crashed near the Windalco Bauxite property, between St Ann and St Catherine, and then burst into flames as it landed, shortly before 10:00 am.

Police said they found the drugs at the crash site.

“The charred remains of two men were found in the burnt out shell of the crashed air craft,” said Sergeant Jubert Llewellyn, spokesperson for Operation Kingfish, the unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) responsible for investigating drug gangs.

Four men have been arrested and three motor cars seized in connection with the find. The aircraft was registered in Florida.

The police yesterday seized 1,000lb of compressed ganja close to the site where a small aircraft crashed near Faiths Pen in St Ann, killing the two passengers. Their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

Sergeant Jubert Llewellyn, spokes-person for Operation Kingfish, told THE STAR that the crash occurred about 10 a.m. after the aircraft reportedly caught fire while attempting to land near a mining plant. Police personnel conducted searches after the incident and discovered the drug in the area where the crash occurred. It is believed that the drug was to be loaded on to the plane.

Llewellyn said that based on intelligence gathered, they later seized three cars and four men were arrested in connection with the discovery. The lawman said that they believe the drug was to be loaded on to the plane, which is registered to a Florida-based company.

Just last Thursday a joint operation resulted in the seizure of 1,744lb (792kg) of compressed ganja and 55lb (25kg) of hash oil on the grounds of the St Ann's Bay Hospital in that parish. That seizure is said to have a street value of $50 million and is the biggest drug bust for 2009.

In that operation, Llewellyn told THE STAR that the team swooped down on a Toyota Hiace minibus and a Honda CR-V that were parked on the compound of the St Ann's Bay Hospital minutes after midnight and retrieved the contraband. Five persons who were aboard the vehicles were reportedly taken into custody.

A sixth man, who the police claim is a major player in the drug trade, was picked up in Spanish Town afterwards in relation to the bust.

The policeman said drug dealers have been moving their operations to the north coast because of the police's increased surveillance on the south.

In the last four weeks, the police have seized some 5,000lb of ganja, three go-fast boats, seven motor vehicles, two high-powered rifles and arrested some 17 persons as part of their efforts on the north coast.
