A British couple were left for dead after being attacked with machetes at their Caribbean holiday home.
Peter and Murium Green have both undergone emergency surgery following the attack in Tobago.
The alarm was raised after Mrs Green, 59, who suffered severe facial injuries, crawled from their home into the street )
Mr Green, 65, a retired businessman, is in a serious condition in the Eric Williams Hospital on the island while his wife is stable.
Doctors put him in an induced coma due to the severity of his head injuries. He sustained wounds to his head, face, eyes and nose during the attack.
His wife had part of her jaw chopped off and needed at least four pints of blood.
The Greens are understood to have been holidaying Tobago for more than seven years.
They owned a single storey holiday home in the Bacelot area of the island which is a favourite with honeymooners.
A Tobago police spokesman said they were attacked by two men on Saturday afternoon, with robbery the most likely motive.
Estate agent Jason Wallace, 30, a friend of the Greens, said: 'They are a sincere and kind couple and what has transpired upon them is not only a robbery, but also outright evil.'
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has condemned the violent attack amid fears it will have a negative effect on tourism.
That is really sad and awful
