The father who filmed his 7-year-old son driving along a deserted dirt road in Quebec says he regrets the incident but feels the episode has been blown out of proportion.
Quebec provincial police are investigating after a YouTube video — which was filmed over two years ago — surfaced of the boy in the driver’s seat while his father shouts encouragement from the front seat, and the rest of the family sits in the back, apparently without seatbelts.
The father told the French-language network LCN on Tuesday that he is ready and willing to meet with police and that he regrets his actions, but also defended himself against the media onslaught.
“It’s a road that goes to a lake,” the father told LCN. “There aren’t any passing cars, there’s nothing there . . . It’s not as dangerous as everyone is saying.”
The video shows the boy driving, while his father sits, filming in the passenger seat of the family’s Honda CRV. He can be heard telling his son, Samuel, to smile for the camera.
It is unclear how fast the SUVwas travelling. At one point, the father told the network his son never exceeded 40 km/h.
Yet at one point in the posting, he is also heard congratulating his son for reaching 70 km/h. He later explained the boy drove "40 maximum."
"Yes, I said he was going 70, but that was just a joke,”the father said. “I would never have let my son drive that fast."
