Wholesalers are the island's biggest solid waste disposal offenders, followed by restaurants, night-clubs and corner shops, it has been revealed.
According to Observer sources, wholesalers head the pack of crafty business operators who illegally take home their garbage to be picked up by the already burdened residential collection system, in an effort to avoid paying for disposal by legitimate commercial collection agencies.
Additionally, one of the sources said these wholesalers would pay handcart men or cocaine users, wanting to make quick cash, to dispose of their garbage, "which they just dump wherever".
The wholesalers have even tried bribing National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) workers to collect their refuse.
<span style="font-size: 23pt">Eighty per cent of the wholesale across the island are said to be owned and operated by Chinese nationals.

"They [wholesalers] are the biggest perpetrators. They don't like to pay," said one of the sources. "They will do anything not to pay."
About 50 per cent of the hundreds of $10,000-tickets issued by the NSWMA on businesses in major towns across the country were levied on wholesalers. The NSWMA has ticketed, on average, 40 businesses per month for solid waste violations. The persons who are paid by these violators are often issued $2,000-tickets.
NSWMA executive director Joan Gordon-Webley disclosed during a recent Observer Monday Exchange meeting of reporters and editors that commercial entities were taking home their refuse in an attempt to avoid spending to have their garbage collected the legal way.
One of the Observer's sources at the NSWMA said on Tuesday that the of wholesale operators taking home their garbage poses a health risk, as the waste - which includes meat refuse - is transported in the same minivan used to move goods for consumption.
"You know the health problems this can cause?" the source said.
Operators caught doing this have had their public health certification revoked by the relevant authority, according to the source.
