MONTEGO BAY, St James -
A civic group headed by businesswoman Odette Soberam Dyer has embarked on a drive to revive the national spirit through a drive to dress up the second city in black green and gold, the colours of the Jamaican flag.

Dubbed the Visual Impact Programme Comittee, the group which operates under the umbrella of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) has been drumming up support for the initiative among businesses communities in Montego Bay.

Chief among the initiatives in this regard is a competition inviting business owners to dress up their display windows in the national colours.

Additionally the group has been conducting a series of walk throughs of the city during which they distribute literature and the relevant entry forms for the competition.

&quot;It's a great idea! I'm going to put my all into it because I want to win!&quot; said an estatic Sunil Khiatani, proprietor of the Taj Mahal jewellery shop in Montego Bay's City Centre plaza.

<span style="font-size: 20pt">Other propeitors were not as receptive.

&quot;I think some of the members of the Chinese community were unable to understand us,&quot; said one member of the committee.

Chinese retail shops comprise a significant section of the second city's business community.

Last week at the launch of the initiative, president of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commmerce and Industry, Lloyd B Smith, said it was important to get the entire business community to participate.

<span style="color: #CC0000">&quot;We are going to have to decide if we want Montego Bay to become the next China town. It is not good enough to just come and make your money and pull your shutters down. You have to give back something to the community where you are making our money,&quot; he said to loud applause from the audience.

He subsequently told the Observer West that some members of the Chinese community were exempt from his reference.

&quot;I am not generalising, there are some who contribute, but <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">the majority do not,&quot; he said.</span>

<span style="font-size: 20pt">THREE Chinese nationals </span>were yesterday arrested after officers from the Organised Crime Investigative Division (OCID) found them in possession of fake ketchup brands.

Officers said they went to a <span style="color: #990000">wholesale/retail</span> establishment on Molynes Road and after a search, found the falsely labelled ketchup.
<span style="font-size: 20pt">The three foreigners</span> are expected to be charged with breaches of the Trademark Act.

Rather than trying to find out why the Chinese can come so far to do business, why goods made in far off places can find its way to Jamaica and be sold on the streets for a very affordable price, the aim of some Jamaicans is to continue to perpetuate a lie.

According to PantyJar he is here in a foreign country earning enough to secure property in Jamaica. He never said one thing about a wholesale Panty Store yet he is worried that the Chinese have 80% of the market.
Why doesn’t he have his own wholesale business in Jamaica?
Why is he in another man's country if he not living on the Rock?

As I have said time and time again we are missing the boat, like it or not the Chinese is part of our culture, whether they are Hakka descendants of indentured servants or Han just come wholesalers. Rather than planning to beat them down we should be studying them. there should be courses at the University to teach the success techniques of Jamaican minorities, since the consensus is that they are doing so much better than the rest of us in Jamaica.
