Dozens injured in accident at a Negril nightclub
Monday, 10 August 2009
More than a dozen persons suffered various injuries they sustained during an accident at the popular Jungle Night Club in Negril, Westmoreland.
Between 15 and 20 patrons had to be taken to the Sav-la-mar Hospital after a canopy on which they were standing collapsed shortly after two o'clock Sunday morning.
It is reported that despite pleas from the operators of the nightclub, several individuals went on the roof to get a better view of a stage show involving artistes Beenie Man, Vibes Kartel and Elephant Man.
Some of the unruly patrons then climbed on top of a canopy which was being used to provide shelter.
According to one of the directors of the night club, Richard Wallace, it was at this point that things went awry.
"Some of our patrons climbed up on a roof and went on a canopy that we have over a walkway and they were jumping up and down on top of it, we told them to stop and come down, they wouldn't, so we had to get the police,
"By the time we got the police to get them off the canopy collapsed under their weight and some people were injured, some people that were on top were injured, some beneath the canopy were injured and they were taken to the Sav-la-mar Hospital where all of them were treated for injuries and sent home," Mr. Wallace said.
He says the club is conducting investigations and has reported the matter to its insurers.
