This board is a perfect example that people write how they speak (patwa) and it is understood by most. Isn't that one of the biggest problems with English as we know it? Why are we having the same focus? Mi nuh get it... I guess I am slow today

The problem is that when Patwa is written using English spelling (without showing the Jamaican pronunciation) it puts Patwa down as being an improper, broken dialect of English, and IT'S NOT! It's a Creole Language separate from English, and the writing should respect the difference.

How does my question (which you have not answered) become my personal issue? <span style="font-weight: bold">Personally</span> I have never looked down on the way people writes their patwa, ok maybe Stormmey and Bippy, so I would like clarification on the background to patwa being put down. The writing will make a difference if when one reads it on paper and is familiar with how it is spoken it can actually make sense to them. Eg ... how the hail you get dong fi = dung?

Furthermore, maybe your lack of knowledge about the history of Patwa and how it was, and to some is still, seen as a broken form of English has to do with your abundant confusion. As for that, all I'm going to tell you is to look it up.

To answer your second question: PHONETICALLY <span style="font-weight: bold">&quot;dong&quot;</span> makes more sense

</div></div>Hey Forty I have friends an family living in JA who do write Patois occasionally on facebook. Granted it's not as much as is seen here on JA.com it's more of a 40/60 split. kinda like how Kingston people will occassionally throw in a few patios words in a conversation

Forty does it look like broken English to you? I've heard my friends on FB tell me that while some of the words look like English I am talking another language with my other friends. I guess the fact that some Italian and Spanish words look similar its a problem.

Spanish and Italian have LONG established writing systems, where as Patwa has had none until now.

People who write in Spanish and Italian know the ways in which to write words and frases, etc. But, in regards to Patwa, without the writing system people don't know if it's &quot;Wha Gwan&quot;, &quot;Whaa Gwan&quot;, &quot;Wa Gwane&quot;, &quot;Whaa Gwaan&quot;, &quot;Wah Gwan&quot;, Waah Gwaan, or &quot;<span style="text-decoration: underline">Waa Gwaan</span>&quot;.

<span style="font-weight: bold">This writing system solidifies the fact that Jamaican Creole is a language;</span>Languages have standard writing systems. It's the next logical step. First language is spoken, then written.

And that's your opinion, and that wouldn't be my first choice of things to translate, but if a group of people feel like doing it, then I say, cool, w/e.
