An Aviation Programme is being introduced at Jamaica College next month for senior students.
The programme, the first of its kind to be offered as part of any high school curriculum in in the English-speaking Caribbean, was launched by Ruel Reid, Principal of Jamaica College Thursday.
Mr. Reid explained that the new aviation course seeks to position students to take on new opportunities
in emerging industries in Jamaica.
Mr. Reid says the new aviation curriculum is being introduced at a time when the education system should be preparing students with knowledge and skills that will facilitate sustainable development.
"I think now is the correct timing in terms of getting the school where I wanted it to be and what I'm doing is diversifying our curriculum offerings being very mindful of the marginalization of our males, giving them a new option in terms of seeing this as part of the education curriculum to channel them in a particular direction. It's also timely as the Government is trying to position aviation and transportation certainly where Vernam Field, (Clarendon) is concerned as a major transshipment hub," he said.
The classes, which are optional, will be offered to students of fourth, fifth and sixth forms during the regular day curriculum.
The aviation course is being implemented in partnership with a private company, known as "The Flying Club".
It will operate under Aircraft Training Organization approval, which is granted by the Jamaican Civil Aviation Authority.
