It is not true. Since during the slave trade <span style="font-weight: bold">opium</span> was the big advantage that the Brits had. They drugged the people, and they would have drugged the unruly captors too. The Brits or I Should say the English,used opium reaped from East India to drug, capture and control Africans. It was easy, They Did it just about everywhere. Including China. There was a theiry since the British ships delivered to the lesser antilies first the more difficult were dropped off at Barbados first.. however I was under the impression that the shipments were made direct markets rather than a milk run....

xKs, There are a lot of different stories out there on this matter. What you heard is just another one of the many...
What I'll tell you is closer to the truth that you are not likely to find in many text books by the colonizers...

The British and the Portuguese were the main slave traders. Actually, the Portuguese were first, then the British entered the trade and became bigger than they ever were. Barbados was the first british settlement in the Caribbean; Jamaica came into the picture later when they took it from Spain and turned it into the Sugar producing capital of the world... The British were supplying slaves to America, the Spanish/Portuguese colonies and also to Jamaica, their biggest prize in the Caribbean.

Jamaica was not a dumping ground as your title implied, but because of its size, it became the &quot;main slave holding location&quot; in the region for the British.... Once there, the slaves were subjected to a classification routine; they were seperated weak from strong, aggressive from docile, more compliant from less so, and were used accordingly... What I heard and read, was that the American (Brits) wanted them after they were &quot;broken in&quot; from Jamaica and were given those that were easier to manage. Many conclusions have been drawn from these &quot;accounts&quot;, you can have a field day if you want!..

that's right. Not necessarily that Jamaica or a next island was a umping ground. Some of that beleif system is politically motivate because it can then be manipulated by even black writers to say that is why blacks in USA didnt rise up an over take the slave owners before the emancipation, blah blah blah...or used as an explanation as to why African-Americans stay so nowadays...you get the picture.

Slaves from different parts of Africa have different perceived &quot;traits&quot;. The Cormantee were thought to be overly aggressive much like the Ashanti. But I think it was the Coromantee that were prone to killing themselves and their kin, if given a chance, instead of being made slaves.

An the Igbo were preceived to be &quot;docile&quot; but in reality they were good at &quot;shucking&quot; only to take set pon you when you think you had &quot;broken&quot; them You know, keep your head down and watch the enemies move til u have an opportunity....So, short term the argument is that they were the weak ones...but not necessarily so in the long run.

so it is a bit hard to argue that some were so much stronger or weaker than others because it isnt that simple.

If you guys are right, it would appear that the &quot;docile&quot; ones really outsmarted the slave traders and the labba mouth &quot;aggressive&quot; ones who got themselves stuck in Jamaica.. I have to wonder!!
