my point is that Boukman who under some tradtions was african born, a muslim or a taino /black, he is also suppose to be Haitian as well.. was a driver then a coach man.. he was &quot;docile&quot; enough to be trusted with massa and his family.... (I recall pissing off Tropi when I pointed out the fact that the idea of house slave popularised by Malcomn X is not correct).. it is the identical idea here... That Jamaica was a hot bed of revolt when compared to the US or Barbados..This is untrue.. There are reasons why barbados was not a hot bed of revolt.. go there abd see why.. And there was multiple revolts in the US... That docility is not a characteristic of Jamaicans. Boukman ripped the skin off the back of slaves with a whip... He than instiagated the greatest revolt in human history...

&quot;More than 1 million slaves are estimated to have been transported directly from Africa to Jamaica during the period of slavery; of these, 200,000 were reexported to other places in the Americas. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Akan, Ga, and Adangbe from the northwestern coastal region known as the Gold Coast (around modern Ghana) dominated the slave trade to the island. Not until 1776 did slaves imported from other parts of Africa-Igbos from the Bight of Biafra (southern modern Nigeria) and Kongos from Central Africa-outnumber slaves from the Gold Coast. But slaves from these regions represented 46 percent of the total number of slaves. The demand for slaves required about 10,000 to be imported annually. Thus slaves born in Africa far outnumbered those who were born in Jamaica; on average they constituted more than 80 percent of the slave population until Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807. When Britain abolished the institution of slavery in 1834, Jamaica had a population of more than 311,000 slaves and only about 16,700 whites.&quot;

Ethnicity was prominent in the organization and execution of slave revolts in Jamaica, especially those during the 17th and 18th centuries. Akan slaves were involved in most revolts. In 1673 about 300 Akan slaves revolted in the north central parish of Saint Ann. In 1690 another Akan rebellion involving 400 slaves broke out on Suttons Estate in the south central parish of Clarendon. After setting the plantation on fire the rebels fled to the hilly interior, from where they conducted continuous raids on nearby plantations. In 1745 Akan slaves revolted in the southeastern parish of Saint Thomas.

In 1760 a slave by the name of Tacky, an Akan who had been a chief in Africa, led the most widespread slave revolt in Jamaica's history. Beginning in the northeastern parish of Saint Mary, it soon spread to a number of parishes, including Westmoreland, Saint James, and Clarendon, and to the capital of Kingston. The rebels, inspired by the victory of the maroons in winning their liberty, fought in the same manner in an effort to win their freedom. It took the authorities six months to suppress Tacky's revolt, and by then the rebels had killed 60 whites. Tacky was shot dead by a maroon, and the authorities executed nearly 400 slaves. Other revolts broke out in 1761, 1765, and 1766, but they were quickly crushed by the authorities with the aid of maroons.

The most violent slave revolt of the 19th century was the Baptist War, also known as the Christmas Rebellion, in 1831. Led by Samuel Sharpe, a Baptist deacon and domestic slave, the revolt began in Saint James and soon engulfed much of western Jamaica. In its suppression, more than 430 blacks, including Sharpe, were executed. All who were thought to have been associated with the revolt, including white missionaries, were either imprisoned or killed. This revolt was a decisive factor in the British move toward emancipation, in addition to intensified antislavery agitation by the Quakers (Society of Friends) in Britain, led by Thomas Buxton, Thomas Clarkson, William Wilberforce, and Stephen Lushington.&quot;

It is a part of the devide and conquer theory. If all the rest believe that the Jamaicans was a special notorious breed, they will see them as different. And will avoid adopting their attitude,and keep the peace instead. The African American slaves have been culled constantly of their leaders, and hanged on trees as examples for the survivors to see for 300 years. This could not happen to any great extent, due to the influence of the maroon presence, which the slavers, always avoid upsetting them. Since they could not defeat them. not true..Sorry Haiti had a tradition of rebellion equally as ilustrious as Jamaicas. They had repeated revolts nearly as frequently... Jamaican Maroons were more likely to reject run aways than to let them stay before teh treaty. with good reason....The yanki slave revolted as frequently as the Jamaican.. There are geographic as well as demographic reasons why Jamaivans were more succesful

I've even heard Haitians say that.

I wish people would A) stop condemning voodoo, obeah, and other African-born traditions and B) recognize that Haiti's curse was that the French extorted money from the newly independent republic to be paid as damages to former slave owners; it took over a century to pay the tens of millions of dollars demanded, plus interest to the American banks who loaned the money.

I agree - plus there was much selling between colonies as everyone dumped their troublemakers on everyone else. It really annoys me when black people from the Americas quibble about one group being better than the other, like DR looking down on Haiti, or Americans snubbing Jcans. We're all &quot;the same&quot; (as in our origins). Cho.

Doc, they may not have been all docile slaves but I can assure you that those slavers would have tried to take <span style="font-weight: bold">the most loyal, the most hardworking, and the most obedient</span> from among the many... ~ Were you in a slavers' shoes, would you have taken any of <span style="font-weight: bold">the known laggards, trouble makers and warlike aggressive ones?</span> ~ I am not expecting an answer...
