Tourism sector facing dire straights says McNeil

The Opposition is predicting that the tourism sector will face an extremely challenging period over the next three months.
According to Dr. Wykeham McNeil, Spokesman on Tourism, the protracted recession, the rapid increase in the number of rooms and heavy price discounting by hotels have left the sector in dire straits.
"Even though we've held our numbers (as) up to April of this year we had a 3.4% growth, (but) even though we held (those numbers), we've held them at the expense of heavy discounting. A lot of the properties are discounting 30, 40, 50% so, what is happening is that while in some cases they're holding their numbers, their revenues are down significantly so, they're not earning what they earned last year or in previous years," he said.
Earlier this week, Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett said he had a list of hotels which are in the process of reducing their work force.
He however sought to downplay the matter saying the September to November is usually a slow period for the tourism sector and hotels normally scale down their operations during those months.
