NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Police are hunting for the killer who stuffed a body believed to be that of a Yale University graduate student behind a wall in the high-security laboratory building where she worked.

Police found the body around 5 p.m. Sunday, on what was to have been 24-year-old Annie Le's wedding day.

The building where the body was found is part of the university medical school complex about a mile from Yale's main campus and is accessible to Yale personnel with identification cards. A network of some 75 video surveillance cameras are trained on every door.

"It's a frightening idea that there's a murderer walking around on campus," said 20-year-old Muneeb Sultan, a chemistry student. "I'm shocked that it happened in a Yale building that had key-card access. It's really sad."

A friend said Monday the doctoral student never showed signs of worry about her own personal safety at work, although she did express concerns about crime in New Haven in an article she wrote last year.

"If she was concerned about (it) she would have said something to someone and they would have known," Jennifer Simpson told CBS' "The Early Show." "And Jon (her fiance) would have known, her family would have known, friends would have known."

Simpson called Le, a pharmacology student from Placerville, Calif., friendly and affable to everyone.

"She was a people person," Simpson said. "She loved people. She loved life. We just can't imagine anybody wanting to harm Annie."

Another friend, Laurel Griffeath, echoed those thoughts on NBC's "Today" show.

"I can't even imagine someone mad at Annie, much less wanting to hurt her," Griffeath said.

Police are analyzing what they're calling "a large amount" of physical evidence.

They will not discuss suspects, other than to say Le's fiance is not a suspect and has assisted in the investigation. It was unknown Monday morning when an autopsy would be performed.

Campus officials have said that the security network recorded Le entering the building by swiping her ID card about 10 a.m. on Sept. 8, and have been baffled before Sunday's gruesome discovery that she was never seen leaving.

The university planned a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. Monday at the Ivy League university. The Yale Daily News says an e-mail to the Yale community invites participants to "bring a candle and join us in solidarity."

Yale President Richard Levin offered support to Le's family and her fiance, Columbia University graduate student Jonathan Widawsky. The couple was to marry Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore.

"The family and fiance and friends now must suffer the additional ordeal of waiting for the body to be positively identified," Levin said.

Le wrote an article that was published in February in the medical school's magazine. The piece, titled "Crime and Safety in New Haven," compared higher instances of robbery in New Haven with cities that house other Ivy League schools. It also included an interview with Yale Police Chief James Perrotti, who offered advice such as "pay attention to where you are" and "avoid portraying yourself as a potential victim."

"In short, New Haven is a city and all cities have their perils," Le concludes. "But with a little street smarts, one can avoid becoming yet another statistic."

Le, who worked in a laboratory in the five-story building's basement, was reported missing Sept. 8. Her ID, money, credit cards and purse were found in her third-floor office.

More than 100 local, state and federal police had been searching the building for days, using blueprints to uncover any place where evidence or Le's body could be hidden.

Investigators on Saturday said they recovered evidence from the building, but would not confirm media reports that the items included bloody clothing.

On Sunday morning, a state police van drove down a ramp into the building's basement area. Authorities also sifted through garbage at a Hartford incinerator Sunday, looking through trash that was taken from the building in the days since Le went missing.

Yale students on Monday called the finding sad, but some said the discovery doesn't make them feel less safe at Yale.

"Obviously it's a city and there are safety concerns," said 18-year-old Peter Spaulding, a student from Maryland. "It can happen anywhere. You have to go on with life."

Law student Lindsay Nash of West Chester, Pa., said she doesn't sense a heightened level of fear on campus.

"There's always an attention to safety here," she said. "I think there's perception that you need to be careful regardless."

my casion roomie got mugged twice coming home, once with a male friend.

"Annie Le had unlimited potential. This is not about urban crime, university crime or domestic crime, but a workplace crime, which has become a concern around the country," Lewis said.

Police matched DNA from Clark to evidence found at the crime scene on the Ivy League campus where the medical examiner said Le was suffocated. Clark was previously named a "person of interest" in the case.

He was arrested at the the Super 8 hotel in Cromwell, about 25 miles north of the Ivy League campus, where he had been staying since he was released early Wednesday by police, who had served search warrants looking for evidence linking him to Le's death.

Lewis said there are no other suspects. Authorities would not comment and a possible motive, other than to call it workplace violence. The arrest warrant was sealed by a judge.

Police said earlier charges will be filed against anyone whose DNA matches evidence found at the crime scene.

Authorities compared DNA taken from Clark's hair, fingernails and saliva with more than 250 pieces of evidence collected at the crime scene in New Haven, Conn., and from Clark's Middletown, Conn., apartment.

Le's body was found on Sunday — the day her wedding had been planned for — stuffed into a wall of the lab building where she did research and to which Clark had access. Dr. Wayne Carver in a brief statement on Wednesday said an autopsy of Le determined that she was murdered by "traumatic asphyxia" due to neck compression.

Clark had not been talking to police, Lewis said.

Clark is a Yale staff member who did custodial work at the laboratory, such as cleaning mouse cages. He has three relatives — his fiance, his sister and brother-in-law — that do similar work at the Yale lab.

Clark and several other people have been under constant surveillance. The New Haven Police chief declined to say who those people were.

Two new search warrants were issued on Wednesday for a red Ford Mustang belonging to Clark and for other undisclosed items.

Clark was taken into police custody late Tuesday and released Wednesday at 3 a.m. after authorities collected DNA samples from him, questioned him and searched his apartment. No charges have been filed against him.

Clark said through his lawyer that he wanted to cooperate with the investigation. His attorney David Dworski said Wednesday his client is "committed to proceeding appropriately with the authorities." He would not comment further.

Clark lives in an apartment with fiancee Jennifer Hromadka, whom he plans to marry in December 2011, according to the couple's wedding Web site.

Among the possible motives detectives are mulling over is Clark's reported criticism of Le for her handling of the lab mice the two worked with, according to the New York Daily News.

Citing e-mails the pair reportedly exchanged, the Daily News said Clark had accused Le of failing to follow protocol when handling the mice, and she'd promised to do better.

Late Tuesday, capping a weeklong hunt first for Le and then for her killer, Clark was escorted out of his apartment and into a silver car. Neighbors leaned over the building's iron railings and cheered as police led him away.

Lewis declined to comment on reports that Clark's fiancee had contacted authorities Tuesday night when he came home with scratches, wearing different clothes than the ones he'd left for work in.

Hromadka, wrote on her MySpace page that she's not perfect, but cautioned people not to judge her.

"Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I'm not perfect and I don't live to be, but before you start pointing fingers make sure your hands are clean!!" the 23-year-old wrote.

The date of the MySpace posting is unclear. The page has since been taken down.

NEW YORK (CBS) Jennifer Hromadka, fiancée of Raymond Clark III, shot down "rumors" that Clark was having an affair with another woman at the Yale Animal Research Clinic (YARC), where he and murder victim Annie Le worked. Clark has been named as a "person of interest" by the New Haven Police Department in the murder of the 24-year-old graduate student whose body found behind a wall at the clinic.

According to the couple’s listing on a wedding Web site, the two are to be married on Dec. 20, 2011. Neighbors said that Hromadka, 23, was seen moving things out of the Middletown, Conn. apartment on Monday, Sept. 14 and brought take-out food into the building the next day, according to CBS affiliate WFSB Hartford.

In a May 15, 2008 MySpace blog post which has since been taken down, Hromadka wrote that Ray "has no interest in any of the other girls at YARC as anything more than friends."

She went on to say that her fiancé "is a bit naïve, doesn’t always use the best judgment, definitely is not the best judge of character but, he is a good guy."

"He has a big heart and tries to see the best in people ALL THE TIME! even when everyone else is telling him that the person is a psycho or that the person can’t be trusted," she blogged on the social networking site.

"He thinks everyone deserves a second chance. and has a hard time hurting peoples feelings and it takes him getting burned to learn," Hromadka wrote.

Hromadka continued to blast rumors of a "fling" and say that the reason she and Clark were not living together at the time was for "financial reasons."

"We are not broken up nor where [sic] we," she wrote.

"Obviously the people that are creating these rumors must need to get a hobby!!" she posted.

Clark was taken into police custody Sept 15, but not charged. He has since been released as police say he is complying with their investigation.

Le went missing Sept. 8, 2009, five days before her wedding. Her body was found on the day she was to wed.
