I wouldn't say that reporters should arbitrarily break the trust of people they talk to, or in this case, to publicize a comment that was made in private, but there are times when a reporter, preserving his journalistic integrity, may have to break such an 'agreement' in the greater interest of the public's right to know.

I think it was probably a good thing that the reporter tweeted the comment. Now if we could only know what he thinks of some other people.

Obama may be relatively inexperienced, but I think he is saavy enough to know that he should treat every comment he makes to a reporter as &quot;on the record&quot; just as every seasoned media person knows that every mike is an &quot;open mike&quot; even if the red lights are on.
