Transport Minister Mike Henry.By year end, the country should have another airport on the eastern end of the island.
Transport Minister Mike Henry announced on Thursday that the expansion of the Boscobel Aerodrome in St. Mary is due to be completed by December.
Mr. Henry told reporters Thursday that the opening of the expanded airport will give a much needed boost to several sectors in that area.
"The ground transportation service will grow and increase with transfers from Boscobel to the hotels. The total passenger traffic, including international passengers, is to increase by approximately 12,000 persons by year three over the present levels of just over 1,500 domestic passengers,"
"The number of aircraft movement is projected to increase by 60% to 16 daily flights and increase promotion of that area and of that marketplace,"
Turning to plans to establish an air cargo hub at Vernamfield in Clarendon, Mr. Henry noted that Cabinet is now reviewing technical plans relating to that project.
And Mr. Henry is to consult with Prime Minister Bruce Golding regarding the renaming of highway 2000 in honour of track star Usain Bolt.
There has been some confusion as to whether the entire road network, to include the Portmore leg, will be renamed after the triple world record holder since the announcement was made by the Prime Minister on Tuesday.
Mr. Henry told reporters Thursday those matters will be settled when he meets with Mr. Golding.
"As the Prime Minister said he passed that onto me as Highway 2000 and I have to finally discuss with him because I guess you are going to say Highway 2000 includes the Portmore leg, I will be clarifying that with the Prime Minister overall because we have to look at that," Mr. Henry said.
