There seems to be some resistance to Americans by people from the islands, thus, if there are some here who are of this persuasion, you may quiz me to see if I am not yet another condescending interloper.

You remeber that journalist who interveiwed Princess diana... He marked his cards with the yankis when he described some attractive female journalists of Asian extraction as &quot;Asian Babes&quot; he was pilloried and I beleive lost a contract for being sexist and racist.. The man was of Asian extraction... The fact tjhat they were asian, and attractive which what he was pointing out was taken out of context....

I take neither insults nor praise from yanki seriously.. I fear their praise as I find their aproach to life Irony free... It is easier to ignore them, as there is not a concept of loyal oppostion.. either you agree total with all tehir veiws or you are condemened by standard words that become purjorative... (Kanadian, Kamunist, socialist, conservative, black, African, liberal)

If you know Jamaicans and understand them too, you would know what to take seriously and what<span style="font-weight: bold"> not </span>to take seriously.

Have to learn the sense of humour that is there and not get too offended with it.......

Nyah dont you find the use of the term &quot;the islands&quot; as condiencending as native ? and it is not unexpected.. simplistic labels....

We are Jamaicans. Not to be bundled together in an undiefentiated mass.. We are more connected by history and culture to a country in south american than we are to our nearest neighbours.. I find commoun cause with Cubans through geography, but with Belizians and Guyanese through history, religion poltical system,justice system, but thye are on the mainland. Yet they are not islands.. I find the gentle rivalry between does Bajans and other Trinis as normal.. Our dishes are different our education the same... I have no fear of being claiisifed as a West Indian, a denizen of the Carribean.. But dotn dare describe me as from the islands. .

The arogance of the metropole... When the Britz hear my accent, they ask where in the Caribean I am from.. That is a specific geographic marker, a clear postion, a region, even a poltical entity given the colonail history.. (Waht they are construding to English history, ).. But islands an apendage to the metropole.. indistint, indistinushble a lupen inferior mass is implied...

Trust me Wahalla, I get fully where you are coming from....I guess I find it amusing when others cannot.

Certain nuances seem to be lost in the &quot;translation&quot; and non-jamaicans will get offended by what I think are the wrong things to be offended by....say offensive things.... and then lash out which then causes the machetes to come out....If you are following me.

A native of Jamaica fighting out of Kanada was how that mess up Bert Cameron was described. I am comfortable with that.. it suggest both origin and location.. But a yanki describing to describe Jamaicans as natives....

Yes, Semantics can be a b*tch, but I stay away from comments that can be misconstrued, although innocently, and just talk to each person as I do in real life. We don't know each other, no, but we can communicate effectively.

I won't disrespect a person and I trust me, coming from the south, here in America, I fully appreciate your candor referencing how people can make generalizations about you without taking the time to educate themselves about your culture.

Down south, it is common of people in other parts of America to make fun of the way Southern people talk. However, there is a manner in which we speak that is regional--we don't all talk the same, also, there are certain cultural patterns that many people don't even understand.

Have you ever heard of the Geechees or as more commonly known, Gullah people here in America? The Gullah people, who are of African slave ancestry, live in the Sea Islands and the coastal regions of nearby South Carolina, Georgia and northern Florida. In Georgia, they are commonly referred to as Geechees. A newer term is Native Islanders, but its appropriateness has been debated because it implies that the people are native to the Americas and not to Africa. They are often confused to be from the Caribbean, but if one knows anything about American history, you shouldn't make that comparison at all.
