Job fair opens for local nurses

THE Ministry of Labour and Social Security officially opened a job fair programme Monday which is expected to provide job opportunities for scores of local nurses in Canada.
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles opened the fair at the ministry's North Street headquarters in Kingston.
"The programme, which is named the Canadian Licensed Nurses Practical Nursing Programme (LPN) is an initiative between the ministry and Marmicmon Integrated Marketing and Communications, an overseas marketing firm," Charles said.
Ministry officials said the programme was implemented after months of planning and discussions.
Under the programme, over 200 nurses will be interviewed at the ministry offices by Canadian employers now in the island.
The group of nurses were all involved in a training programme at the Knox Community College, Pre University School, and the Browns Town Community College. Part of the curriculum in the training programme was provided by the Canada Academic Institution.
Describing the move as revolutionary, Charles said with the harsh economic times this was essential to providing necessary job opportunities for the labour force.
"<span style="font-weight: bold">This is the precise reason that the ministry has partnered. to train and certify Jamaican licensed practical nurses for the Canadian labour market," </span>Charles said.
Charles also said that under the programme LPNs from the Pre University School and Resident Care Aides from the Browns Town Community College will be the targeted groups.
The interviews will take place over a one-week period.
