Canadians may have good reason to be upset when confronted with their monthly cellphone bills.
It turns out Canadian cellphone users are, on average, paying some of the highest rates in the developed world to use their cellphones.
If it's any consolation, at least we can say the Americans are paying more.
Canadians are digging deep into their pockets to pay the third highest cellphone rates in the world, according to a report from the Organisation for Econcomic Co-operation and Development, an association representing the governments of 30 democratic countries around the world.
Canadians identified as medium users -- defined as those customers using 780 minutes of voice calls, sending 600 text messages and eight multimedia or video messages (MMS) per month -- spend about US$500.63 per year on their cellphone contracts.
Only users in Spain (US$508.26) and the United States (US$635.85) pay more.
On average, cellphone users in developed countries pay an average of US$11-$12 per month (US$132-$144 per year) for similar service plans, with the cheapest rates being found in Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands.
However, when it comes to low-end or budget contracts, Canadians fare slightly better than users in 10 other countries. Canadians on what are defined as "low-use" plans -- 360 minutes of voice calls, 396 text messages and eight MMS messages -- pay about US$195.68 per year, good for 11th highest in the world.
While the global average for low-cost cellphone plans is about US$14 per month, or about US$168 a year, users in Scandinavia -- specifically Denmark, Sweden and Finland -- enjoy the best rates, at between US$4.19 and US$6.47 per month.
High-end users in Canada -- 1,680 minutes of voice calling, 660 texts and 12 MMS messages -- pay an average of US$563.20, good for 12th highest of the countries surveyed. American users pay an average of US$635.85 (6th highest of the ranked countries) while users in Spain are paying the highest rates, or about US$956.86 per year.
While the global average for high-end users is a US$41 monthly bill -- or about US$492 per year -- users in Denmark (US$182.95), The Netherlands (US$187.59) and Sweden (US$196.98) pay considerably less.
