Member of Parliament for St. Elizabeth South Eastern, Richard Parchment, has confirmed that a Chinese firm is interested in purchasing the island's largest bauxite plant, ALPART.
Parchment told RJR News that discussions are taking place between the owner of ALPART, UC Rusal and the Chinese company.
RJR News was unable to reach Mining Minister, Phillip Paulwell, for a comment.
According to Parchment despite the discussions, RUSAL is preparing to resume the processing of bauxite at ALPART by the end of 2016.
The St. Elizabeth South Eastern MP said mining operation and the export of raw bauxite from the plant are progressing and a third shipment of bauxite should leave Port Kaiser shortly.
Three hundred persons have gained employment since ALPART resumed operations earlier this year.
