(CNN) -- A 37-year-old Pennsylvania woman died Sunday after being mauled by her pet black bear, authorities said.

Kelly Ann Walz was attacked when she entered the bear's cage to feed the 350-pound animal and clean its cage, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The bear lived in a 15-by-15-foot steel and concrete enclosure on Walz's property in Ross Township.

The bear wasn't the only unusual animal living on the property, an official with the State Game Commission told CNN affiliate WFMZ-TV. The homeowner had a permit to keep a Bengal tiger and an African lion, and the property routinely passed inspection and had no violations, he said.

A neighbor shot and killed the bear that attacked the owner, state police said.

Jamaicans were apt to climb into the lion cage at hope zoo in my youth... claiming to be rastas would give them kinship with the lion...

yes.... I beleive the last case was in the 90's.. I never went to a Zoo in Ja.. but I beleive they had to put higher and higher fences... I also believe one lion wasa gift from Selassie so as HIM was invovled the mentally disturbed tended to climb the fence...

Jamaica only have goat and fowls in the zoo. they have a few peacocks, but those spend most of their time in the gardens instead.
No lions, bears or tigers. a few monkeys and lizards.
The lions when they wer ther was in a complete enclosure with iron bars all over including th roof. this came up before and Tuff mentioned the name of the Lion who chewed a few Jamaians... There was a debate on a early perkings iteration that they should have shot th elion...

when did the lions leave / die ?

I ask becauyse I seem to recall something in 95 about man being chewed... But this is by association of a time line..

ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania - A woman was killed by a captive 350-pound black bear as she cleaned its cage Sunday night, officials said Monday as they revealed her husband, an exotic pet dealer, was operating with an expired license.

Kelly Ann Walz, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tim Conway, an information and education supervisor with the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Michael Walz's license to keep and sell exotic animals expired in June of 2008, Conway said. He called the lapse a technicality.

Walz, who has been licensed since 1994, reported to authorities in 2007 that <span style="color: #FF0000">he kept a lion, cougar, jaguar, tiger, black bear, leopard and two servals</span> on the property in Ross Township, a rural area in the Poconos Mountains, about 20 miles northeast of Allentown.

Kelly Ann Walz went into the bear's 15-by-15-foot steel and concrete cage about 5 p.m. Sunday, throwing a shovelful of dog food to one side to distract the bear while she cleaned the other side, Conway said. At some point the bear turned on her and attacked.

Kids witness attack
Her children and the neighbor's children saw the attack and summoned help, and the neighbor shot and killed the bear while it was atop Walz, Conway said.

&quot;Why this woman chose to go in the same area that the bear was in is beyond me. It's a fatal mistake,&quot; he said. &quot;These things are not tame animals, they're wild animals.&quot;

Owners of wild animals typically have a two-section cage, allowing them to isolate the animal behind a locked gate while they clean the other part, Conway said.

Michael Walz is listed in state corporation records as the president of World of Reptiles Inc. The business was created in 1988.

A phone listing for Walz could not immediately be located.
