what is your opnion on it ????? What do you think it means.. It means different things to different people and all things to all peoples.. once we establish what you think it means then we can guide you.. shouyld you not be learning about the Tudors and the Jarrow March, the 7 days in Naples, the Warsaw uprising, the herioic resistance of the Marqui, the glory of the Chechnicks, the Ustasis and the Stasi...???? Tools that will allow you to function in Euro-polar enviroment. Jamaican history should be taught by your consious parents....

course if it was me I would demonstrate that the Jamaican experience is a template for european integration.. predating the European Union...Demonstrating that the Nazi period was the equavalent of Jamaican colonial system on mainland Europe, with Churchil as Cuddjoe.. and the post Nazi experience with the from colonial powers as a measure of the post colonial experience...

Well it should really mean out of many people we are one,and therefore united in our multi ethnicity,......but in reality it is nothing like that,...everyone looks down on everyone else,and those they are forced to look up to they are jealous and badmind of them.

Everyone secretly wish they were someone else and are unhappy with their lot,whites are envied and worshipped in equal measure,browns are adored and envied in equal measure,and blacks bleach their skin endlessly to look anything but black.........some people have mis-interpreted the "out of many we are one" to mean that after they have killed off everyone else it`s only them alone left,.........apart from that....JAMAICA LAND WE LOVE!.

U might add the brown and white feel guilty and blessed that they are not black... but that does not paradigm dont quite if they are from say a rural setting like dung STE where they are poorer than the urban whites and never owned that many blacks as they were imported. Then you have the jews and Syrians who are technially white but are seen by the whites as non white... So dem nat black and nat white.. Given their common heritage from the levant are more united than in Palistine... with all ah them intermixxe.. Yu then have the Indian / Chinese dynamic, who are proud of their stright hair.. and diefentiate between the Jamaican origin and the newly arrieved ones.. Yu then have the expat white and the Jamaican white.. The expat white want to be Jamaican white so they can claim to be black.. The Jamaican white deny dem have black blood and want to be white like the expat....

course yu tyhen have the black nationalist who claim every thing in Jamaica is black and all non black Jamaican are rascist.. but deny that white Jamaican are black... And then no black Jamaican is descended from slaves dem is all Maroon....

Have I offended enough Jamaicans....?????

Jaii93, You are young enough to start learning the "realities" of life and old enough to learn about your ROOTS if you were born in Jamaica. I'm not picky but you said you were "brought up there"; anyhow, I'll assume you are truly connected...

<span style="font-weight: bold">OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE</span> as someone said means differerent thing to different people. Our founding fathers think it was neccessary to have a "national motto" that reflected the diversity of Jamaica. Our backgrounds are many, though we are a predominantly "black" nation, with a majority descended from African Slaves.. The "mix up, mix up" you referred to, are the Indians, Germans, Spaniards, plus the Arawacks, Tainos, English and others too numerous to mention...

It was and is the hope by our founders, that when we think of our motto, we will overcome "our differences", come together, unite together and live as ONE UNIFIED nation.. I will say to you, that we are only humans with falings, trying to live up to the ideals of the motto.. In other words, it's a struggle, but we wont give up the FIGHT!!.. To learn more, your best bet are the history books, many on Jamaica... Good Luck!

Foreigners are often startled when they hear me talk. The unmistakable lilt brands me as Jamaican, but my appearance does not fit their racial profile.

"Where are you from?" is nearly always followed by, "You don't look Jamaican."

So what does a Jamaican look like?

True, most Jamaicans have dark brown complexions, a combination of a West African heritage and the island's sunny climate. That brings us to one myth: people with dark skins tan, just like people with lighter pigmentation. You should see how much paler some of my friends became after living in Toronto for a while.

Historians tell us many Jamaicans are from such tribes as the Ashanti, the proudest and fiercest of West African warriors. It stands to reason that prisoners of war would make up a large part of the captives shipped in chains to work on Jamaican sugar plantations. It was customary for prisoners captured during battle to be enslaved. The Egyptians did it to the Jews, the Romans did it to other people all over Europe, and somewhere in the world someone is probably practicing the same heinous form of human exploitation right now. We just don't hear about it.

Many owners of Jamaica's estates were not Jamaican but British - absentee landlords. They spent part of the year on the island, but their homes and hearts were back in England or Scotland. In the days of the tall ships, a journey across the Atlantic would take months, and a land owner would be reluctant to spend all that time getting to Jamaica only to turn around and sail right back. They would spend months in Jamaica before heading home. Men being what they are (most of us, anyway); some of these landowners would establish second families in Jamaica. Their mates were invariably slaves.

To protect their children from being sold into slavery, they would declare them legally "white" - hence the expression "white-by-law." Landowners could count on their offspring to protect their interests in Jamaica while they were back in Britain.

That would account for at least some of today's "Jamaican white" islanders. Others, of course, are descended from colonial civil servants who came to Jamaica and founded families there. A few came from America and other countries as clergymen, missionaries or businessmen - or for some other reason.

A significant part of Jamaica's heritage is Jewish. Sephardic Jews fled from Spain and Portugal to escape the Inquisition, and remained in the island after the British drove out the Spanish in the mid-1600s. You can see this heritage in many Jamaican surnames. One of my great-grandmothers was a Miss Salomon, a distinctly Jewish name.

With the abolition of slavery in the 1800s, large numbers of indentured servants came from India, with a sprinkling from Ireland and other parts of the British Isles. Traders from China, Lebanon and Syria (and from other countries) also migrated to Jamaica in search of business opportunities.

It's no wonder that when Jamaica achieved independence in August 1962, our leaders chose as our motto: "Out of Many One People."

On this, the 45th anniversary of Jamaican Independence, I would like to propose that we declare the existence of a Jamaican race. Not black. Not white. Not Asian or Middle Eastern. But simply Jamaican.

My late mother had blonde hair and blue eyes. My cousin, Kathleen, has tawny skin and black hair. Her father, a distinguished schoolteacher, had chocolate-colored skin. His ancestors were from West Africa. It would be preposterous for me to think I belong to a different race from Kathleen or her children and grandchildren. They are my flesh-and-blood.

Another cousin's married name is Chin. Is her daughter Chinese? Of course not. Her daughter is an American of Jamaican descent.

Yes, Jamaican. We are a race apart.

We might look European or African, Chinese or Indian, Jewish or Syrian, but make no mistake: we are Jamaican. We share the indomitable pride, the intolerance of injustice, the irrepressible spirit that distinguishes Jamaicans wherever in the world our destiny sends us.

My Jamaican brothers and sisters, I embrace you on this, the month of our Independence, whether your skin is the darkest dark or the lightest light, whether your eyes are blue or green, brown or black, whatever your facial or physical features might be. We know what it is to be Jamaican. And it has nothing to do with the color of our skin.

One people means one culture .. certainly not one class or one color skin .. BUT its one the reason we identify as Jaycans and proudly fly the flag on occasions. Most of the times ..we can identify with certain notions of the culture that others can't.I think we have more in common that we have differences..

Somebody said why arent I learning about the Tudors etc...Lol Now im in sixth form,we choose the subjects which we wish to learn. I am doin English Literature,Media,Psychology And Sociology,but I have also chosen to take on a voluntary course called the Baccalaureate Project,which will hopefully,give me advantage when i apply for university in 2011.

I have chosen to study the history of jamaica,and what other cultures have contributed to Jamaica today. Which is why my project will be called 'Out Of Many,Oe People,What Does This Really Mean for Jamaica'?

I could easily summarise what it means in one paragraph,as I am sure many people can,but I am writing a 5000 word dissertation on it which is why I have posted this forum.

Also to the person that said that some people may find 'Coolie' a derogatory term,Im sorry if I offended anybody reading this but It has always been a common word used in and around my family...and nobody has ever taken offence.
