St Ann women living in fear

OCHO RIOS, St Ann - The St Ann police are optimistic that information from reported victims will help them to capture an alleged serial rapist who has been driving fear into women across the parish.
According to the police, 11 cases of rape have been reported in the parish in the last five weeks alone, pushing the number of cases since the start of the year to 27.
Investigators believe most of the rapes were committed by one suspect who carries out his acts in Ocho Rios, St Ann's Bay and Brown's Town. Police have also attributed the rape of a woman in Three Hills, St Mary, near Ocho Rios, to the suspect.
It is believed that the alleged serial rapist struck three times since last Friday, but failed at one attempt.
A 13-year-old schoolgirl is among the recent victims of rape in the parish, but police have not linked her case to the alleged serial rapist.
Superintendent Gary Griffiths told the Observer that the number of rapes reported in recent weeks was alarming, as up to the end of July there were 16 cases.
Griffiths said that based on the description given by victims, investigators have intensified their effort and were trying to put together a sketch of the suspect.
"The police have some strategies that we are working on and we hope these initiatives will bear fruit," Griffiths said. "From all indication, it appears to be the same perpetrator," said the police superintendent.
He said the police believe there may be other victims who have not made reports to the police.
Griffiths said the suspect is of light complexion, slim-built, sports low-cut hair, is about 5 feet 8 inches tall and is approximately 25 years old. Griffiths said many of the victims have also reported that the man has a distinct 'redding' of the lips and a mole in his face, near his mouth.
Griffiths said the suspect drives a white station wagon, poses as a robot taxi driver, sometimes offers rides to his intended victims and targets mostly petite women between ages 20 and 25. However, two of his victims were 37 years, and another 19.
Griffiths said the police have received reports that the suspect would divert onto secluded paths to commit his crime, sometimes intimidating his victims with the use of a gun or a knife. He said that while none of the victims were harmed, they have been threatened.
Griffiths has urged women to be extremely careful, especially when accepting rides from people unknown to them.
