Speaking of that...I heard about it within 10minutes of it being announced, and was not able to google the site (apparently was clogged up).
The first comments of "but why does he deserve it?!" I was willing to look at objectively, and said for my bit that "yes, perhaps they could have waited a couple of years...", and privately thought that this might be making another rod for his back.

As the day progressed, and the comments became more vitriolic - including to the point where someone mentioned how their American Aunt will react because she never wanted Obama to be president anyway - and it is "because he is black" [SIC], it was apparent that there now seems to be an element of racism driving the extensive discourse.

I decided to really analyse - and in this thinking, quietly came to the conclusion that "YES...he did deserve it".

I considered all the others before him who had won, and balanced their achievements, even Nelson Mandela's I, in the past had held reservations because, although he was the first black president of South Africa, the inequalities that blacks faced under him and level of power still held by white SAs were still far from balanced - but his prize I believe were also based on "hope".

And what more can I say for Al Gore - THAT year I actually concluded that there was not that much happening elsewhere, so he was easy target.

From a black perspective, Pres.Obama represents the pivotal achievement of a race of people who were previously suppressed by the very majority that he now stands ahead of, and represents...and many of THOSE must also have voted for him to have got into that position. The world had not moved beyond race...but it was entering another very painful I thought (strange as it might seem, I also envisioned from thereon, where there will be more violence committed by the whites who cannot mentally deal with this).

There was also hope at the time - and some realisation - of aspirations regarding the middle-east (remember the first phonecalls he made in the inception of presidency?), greater involvement of developing nations such as BRIC (see the currency concessions), and recent acquiesce over missile system in Poland (where he was nearly pilloried for seeming foolish/weak).

For some of you - Afghanistan might be pointless warmongering - but it represents REAL threats in places such as Britain as it there that you find the training ground for suicide/extremists bombers.

I could go on...but in short, YES I believe he truly deserves it. Or in other words - he deserves it no less than those who have received it in the past.

President Obama DID NOT win the award for "what he has done" in the minds of many who are asking "what has he done"? The answer to that question is clearly stated in the first paragraph of the statement by the <span style="font-weight: bold">Nobel Peace Prize Commitee.</span> Obama did not expect it, he was not working for it, he was surprised that he won it and said so.. ~ NO! he should not return it, that would be a <span style="font-weight: bold">BIG SLAP</span> in the face of the Commitee that he would live to regret... BTW, the cash prize of the award is ONLY $1.5 millon US which he will give to CHARITY; if my memory serves me right... I stand to be corrected if that's not the case... I too was surprised that he was awarded it so SOON and congratulates him. Anyhow, I believe the Prize Commitee is making "a statement" of sorts...

dere is a rumor circulating that they cannot award someone posthumously and since there is high probability that someone may try to bump the Prez they want to get it done now while he is still fresh....

u give it fi di <span style="font-weight: bold">ideal</span> of peace...yes, mi stuck on dat wud today...and as i said wen i compared this awarding to that of ole blemish farrid , both men have been courageous in their search fi di ideal of peace among men an nations....

bravo to the President and bravo to the committee...

Indeed, it was.

But we will see in time with how Obama deals with the nuclear proliferation issue in the Middle East - not just with Iran, but with Israel as well. Let's see if this will cause him to exert leadership - not just by precept, but by example - in creating a more just world, in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East. There can be no peace without justice. A major condition for world peace is a just international order.

Will he stand up to the warmongers and profiteers, the military industrial complex and those who cherish some notion of an American empire? Surely, we can't have a Nobel laureate waging wars of aggression or promoting unjust policies; that would run contrary to the very spirit of the award. We will see! But if/when he does, I'm sure there will be many, even on this board, who will easily give him a pass.

Obama is President of a country that has in place, due to its Constitution, checks and balances...

he is not a magician who can wave a magic wand an bring about all that HE may want to see happen

the fact that those within his own country continue to decry his less than forceful, antagonistic, 'big stick' stance, shows how Americans will continue to choose fluff ovah substance....

for him to somehow change the whole world , shows how we still continue to be ambivalent in wat role we want the US to take on in the world...to do all that he would have to be a despot, putting might infront of right

America's iffy financial situation, its moral bankruptcy wich echoes its financial bankruptcy, makes this impossible

the US needs to finally learn to be a PART of the world at large...it has no mandate to continue to think that it can make the world wat it wants it to be...

after all, if u make the world a carbon copy of the US, well, u can see how a whole lot of the people would be under more subjugation than they currently are...

after all the US as a whole still cannot accept a black president much less objectively evaluate what he is trying to do for the benefit of the citizens an the country as a whole

Exactly!! You only have to remember what (General) President Eisenhower, said prior to leaving office: He warned of the "Military Industrial Complex"... With foresight, he could have added, the "Wall Street Financial Complex" and he would have been double Right and very Prophetic...

You misread my point. I'm not talking about creating the world in America's image; I'm against that. I'm talking about the conduct of American foreign policy that would be based on justice, not warmongering, war profiteering, and empire-building.

I had the same feeling like RichD when I first heard the news, but teng God mi keep an open mind, listen, read an dissect... wasn't long after that I starting seeing correlations between him and Gorbachev for example...

I think this award has added more pressure to potus, who's already under so much pressure, but it's good pressure... and I think he'll try to live up to the expectations, if for nothing or no-one else, his girls...

And I also think that the committee that awarded him the prize was very perceptive...
